It’s amazing to see how much these two young opossum joeys have blossomed in Lisa and Rick’s care. Now that they’re “grown,” they’re not afraid to show some attitude 😂. Their playful spirits and big personalities are making them quite the characters! They still have a bit of growing to do before they are moved into the outdoor soft release pen. ♥️

This beautiful female opossum is nearly ready for her journey back to the wild! After arriving as an orphan, she has spent many months in the dedicated care of Lisa and Rick, growing stronger every day. Now thriving, she is enjoying time in the soft-release enclosure, where she is learning the skills and confidence needed to adapt to life outdoors. Watching her progress is a wonderful reminder of the resilience of wildlife and the impact that compassionate care can make. Soon, she’ll be ready to begin her next chapter in the wild where she belongs. 🩶🌿

Look at these little ones go! 💕 These orphaned opossum joeys have come such a long way. After losing their mother due to a preventable human-related incident (mom was getting into a poorly secured chicken coop). Thankfully, their was some compassion for them. They came in weighing around 28g each, and sadly two passed away the first few days.

They’re now thriving—over the weekend they began lapping on their own, a big milestone in their development. They’re maintaining their body temperature without assistance and, just a couple of days after this video, graduated from the incubator to a larger enclosure where they have room to explore and build strength. Even better, they’ve started using a litter pan! 😊

Their progress is a wonderful reminder of how resilience, combined with a little kindness, can make all the difference. 🐾💚

Update on the young juvenile female opossum joey who came to us suffering from flystrike and multiple bite wounds: she is doing wonderfully!

She is nearing the end of her first course of antibiotics, and we're already seeing encouraging signs of healing in her wounds. While she's not quite as feisty and sassy as she was when she first arrived, her personality is still shining through. She definitely lets us know that being handled is not her favorite thing—and honestly, that's a good sign that she's feeling more like herself.

We're so proud of the progress she's made in such a short time and look forward to watching her continue to recover.

This week, we also welcomed a juvenile common snapping turtle with a severe injury to her upper beak that resulted in the loss of her nose. Remarkably, much of the healing had already occurred on its own in the wild—a testament to just how resilient these animals can be.

While she has adapted surprisingly well so far, injuries like this can create long-term challenges when it comes to breathing while swimming and thriving in the wild. Our goal is to give her the time and support she needs to prove she can successfully live with this deformity before she is released.

Wildlife often faces incredible odds, and this little snapper is no exception. Her determination to survive despite such a significant injury is inspiring, and we're hopeful that with a little extra care, she'll have the chance to return to her natural habitat and continue the life she fought so hard to keep.

This week has been a busy one for turtle care. With the much-needed rain finally arriving, the turtles seem to have become much more active recently—which unfortunately often means we see an increase in injured animals needing help.

Sadly, we lost two turtles this week. One was deceased upon arrival, and another succumbed to what appeared to be severe internal trauma. While those losses are always difficult, we continue doing everything we can for the ones that still have a fighting chance.

The turtle featured in this video came to us with a significant limb degloving injury, so please use caution if you are sensitive to wound images. She was also suffering from flystrike and had a large number of maggots in the wound. Based on its condition, this injury was not recent—she had likely been enduring it for several days, possibly even a week. I've included the original finder photos at the end of the video to show just how far she's already come.

At this stage, we're still unsure whether her leg can be saved, but she's receiving antibiotics to help combat infection and support the healing process. Despite everything she's been through, she's still full of spirit—and plenty of attitude! She’s definitely a spicy one. 😂

Every turtle that comes through our doors reminds us how resilient wildlife can be. Thank you to everyone who takes the time to stop, help, and reach out when they find an animal in need. It truly makes a difference.
