The City of South Lyon Department of Public Works hosted its annual “Arbor Day Ceremony” at Columbia Park in South Lyon, MI. Despite adverse weather conditions marked by rainfall but absent thunder or lightning, the event proceeded successfully. Mayor Steve Kennedy, accompanied by the South Lyon Area Girl Scouts Juniors from Troop 77575, participated in planting and watering the Arbor Day tree using shovels and watering cans. Mayor Kennedy stated the official city proclamation for Arbor Day, marking the 26th consecutive year of celebration. The participation of the Junior Scouts was recognized as an activity that demonstrates their dedication to environmental stewardship, earning each scout the “Tree Promise Badge.”

The ceremony drew many notable attendees from the South Lyon community, including City of South Lyon Mayor Steve Kennedy, Julie Kennedy, Department of Public Works Foreman Ron Brock, Council Members Alex Hansen and Lisa Popa, Oakland County Commissioner Philip Weipert, leaders of Girl Scout Troop 77575, and area residents.

Trees contribute significant benefits to the community, such as absorbing and filtering stormwater, enhancing air quality, providing shade, increasing property values, and reducing soil erosion—all of which foster a more sustainable and attractive environment.

April 19, 2026. 22nd Annual South Lyon Area Creek Cleanup and Earth Day Event:

We are grateful to all our sponsors, volunteers, and participants for making the 22nd Annual South Lyon Area Creek Cleanup and Earth Day Event possible. Thanks to your efforts, creeks, streams, and waterways in South Lyon, Green Oak Township, and Lyon Township are now clear of trash and debris. Your dedication has brought significant improvements to our communities.

Event Goals and Environmental Benefits: The main goals are to allow stormwater to move freely, helping flow efficiently through the region and onward to larger bodies of water, in this case, the Huron River then to Lake Erie. This process is vital for both public and environmental health within the communities.

Green Infrastructure and Stormwater Management: Storm drains in South Lyon, Green Oak Township, and Lyon Township, act as Green Infrastructure, channeling stormwater away from buildings and homes, which helps protect against flooding.
