Muharram Night of the sixth. Mourning for our beloved Shazada Qasem a.s.
Shahzada Qasem ibn al-Hasan (a.s.) was the beloved son of Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba (a.s.) and the nephew of Imam Husayn (a.s.). Though only a young teenager, he possessed extraordinary faith, courage, and devotion to Allah. On the Day of Ashura, when Imam Husayn (a.s.) asked him how he viewed death in the path of Allah, Qasem (a.s.) famously replied, “Sweeter than honey,” revealing the depth of his faith and readiness to sacrifice everything for the truth.
Throughout the day, Qasem (a.s.) repeatedly asked his uncle for permission to enter the battlefield. Imam Husayn (a.s.) hesitated because of his young age and his deep love for his nephew, but when he saw Qasem's unwavering determination and loyalty to the cause of Islam, he granted him permission. Qasem (a.s.) rode into the battlefield with remarkable bravery, fighting courageously against the enemy despite being vastly outnumbered.
In the midst of battle, the young son of Imam Hasan (a.s.) was surrounded by enemy soldiers and sustained fatal wounds. As he fell to the ground, he called out, “O Uncle, come to me!” Hearing his cry, Imam Husayn (a.s.) rushed toward him, pushing through the enemy ranks to reach his beloved nephew. When he finally arrived, he cradled Qasem (a.s.) in his arms and mourned his loss. It is reported that Imam Husayn (a.s.) expressed the pain of a guardian who hears the cry of a loved one but is unable to save him in time. This heartbreaking moment remains one of the most emotional scenes of Karbala.
Shahzada Qasem (a.s.) attained martyrdom while defending the Imam of his time and the principles of Islam. Though young in age, he achieved a rank of eternal honor through his unwavering faith, courage, and loyalty. His sacrifice reminds us that true greatness is not measured by years lived, but by one's devotion to Allah and steadfastness in supporting truth and justice.
