May 2026 Presenter: Rebecca L. Jefferson (Hillcrest Art Club Member)

Topic: Exploration with Momigami in Multi Media Collage

Rebecca (Becky) began her art experience after retiring from the Cleveland Municipal School District. Following her retirement, she signed up for a watercolor class at the Cleveland Heights Community Center. Before the class ended, her instructor suggested that she attend Cuyahoga Community College for art classes. She then took several art classes in the 60+ Program. Thereafter, she continued art classes in the Encore Program at Tri-C. Over the years she has had a number of instructors who taught various media at a number of locations.

In this workshop she will demonstrate her latest work submitted in the April 2026 Art Show entitled "Beyond the Eyes", where she used Momigami in the headdress of her portrait.

Workshop attendees will participate in creating Momigami using various papers in a project. Materials to bring: pencil, ruler, scissors, glue stick that dries clear, hand or body lotion (optional), old credit card for smoothing the paper (or an object that will suffice), and plastic grocery bag or newspaper to protect the table from glue.

Our April presenter was Joyce Morrow Jones. She is one of our new members!

Joyce is a mixed media fiber artist and Teaching Artist who conducts programming for learners of all ages.
She presented a show-and-tell of different types of textiles and patterns used in clothing and decorative arts and show how she has incorporated African fabric into new art forms.
Joyce moderated a workshop where participants explored various patterns and designs from West Africa through examining actual textiles and fabric. A craft activity that allowed participants to create from samples.

Our creations came out great.

We had a special guest today, former president of The Hillcrest Art club, Nancy Aekins.

Nancy has a BFA from Ohio University in Studio Art: Printmaking, Ceramics and Drawing. She worked for Penton Publishing (Now Penton Media) in the art department for 12 years. She currently is working for the Community Partnership on Aging which is right across the hall from where we have our meetings! Nancy has always had a studio in her home. She likes to paint the most, but draws, works with photograph, collage, assemblage as well. Nancy still enters shows and considers herself an active artist.

Nancy shared with the club a variety of Apps she uses to create her amazing digital art and designs

She had some great hints and tips that can be adapted to a number of art forms and art practices.

She likes to paint the most, but draws, works with photograph, collage, assemblage as well. Nancy still enters shows and considers herself an active artist.

At the February meeting, she will present her work with iPad Art. She has found an iPad to be the perfect portable studio to take with her while caring for children. As a result, though her formal art training includes design, printmaking, and clay, her medium for the last several years has been digital.

“My approach tends to be very intuitive, working as one would while doodling and relying on my design and composition sense to form digital images using an unusual number of apps at the same time and with lots of experimentation. I think my work is about color, light, gratitude, fearlessness, and balance. It is often abstract. I do not always know why I work the way I do, but it feels natural and provides satisfaction. I can approach work with an idea in mind, but I do not feel obliged to. When photography is part of the piece, it is often a response to something beautiful or dramatic. I’ve worked this way, side-by-side with my figurative work for many years, so I am comfortable with the duality.
My work seems to bring happiness via beauty. People who have purchased my designs have been excited to show them off because they seem to be energized or relaxed by the colors and shapes.” (see last page for additional information)
