Another wonderful day at the Freedom Festival—made even more special for being on Flag Day.

The day began with Bristol Supervisor Laura Abplanalp hosting our own Lisa Moore of South Bristol and special guests Canandaigua Girl Scout Troop 61057 who presented the colors after comments from the leadership of Elks Club Post 256.

At their invitation, our Supervisor attended the Elks Club’s annual Ceremony retiring old flags and honoring the history of our flag. She is pictured here with Patricia Steele and WWII Veteran Gene Gerrard, who was recently featured in the Pennysaver—thank you for your service!

It was a solemn but moving day.

A great kickoff to the Bristol Hills Freedom Festival!

Thanks to visiting representatives Senator Pam Helming and Assemblywoman Andrea Bailey along with Canandaigua Town Board Member Scott Hall and presiding Town Supervisor Laura Abplanalp of Bristol who joined our own Supervisor Lisa Moore of South Bristol (and The Bristol Library) to welcome guests and begin the weekend’s events.

There were stirring words spoken about our history, our veterans community, the suffragists (who came from our region), and the spirit of collaboration that brought so many individuals, organizations and townships together to put on this great event celebrating our nation’s 250 Years.

We hope you will find the time to come down to Levi Corser Park and take in the historic displays and reenactments and sample the great food, wine, and shopping!

As evidence that the playground brings out the best in people and inspires “fun” across the board, I thought I’d share these out takes from the photo shoot. Just a healthy reminder that campaigns are a sideline to doing work for the town — which can actually include having fun while doing it. Hats off to the whole town board, for all the work they do for us here in South Bristol!

Last night the Finger Lakes Land Trust brought to Town Hall two members of the Department of Environmental Conservation to discuss the state of their efforts to contain Oak Wilt in our region.

This devastating disease threatens the vast presence of oaks in our hills and has been found in the towns of Bristol, Middlesex, and our own South Bristol, all of which have been placed under state quarantine.

Fortunately, unlike the Emerald Ash Borer, this disease can be managed and contained, though it takes extraordinary efforts and resources to do so.

Also: this effort can be helped (or harmed!) by local municipalities and our Town Supervisor has already initiated a review of town policies and procedures to explore where reasonable changes can be made to support this critical work.

To find out more, look for the full presentation which will be posted to the Town Website shortly!

Congratulations to the Bristol Hills Historical Society on another wonderful year celebrating the Burning Springs—a magical place where fire burns on the surface of the water …

Every year the story of this unique place is retold by Alan Jones and this year BHHS had their largest attendance ever to learn the history and science behind it.

The great news is that Alan wrote the story down for the historical society’s book: History and Mystery. If you missed the presentation this weekend, we encourage you to check out the book which is available in many local retailers or online at the BHHS website!

Pursuing grants is a complex, but vital part of leading any small town. Learning the ins and outs of the grant funding process and gaining tips for competing against larger, more well-funded communities is just one aspect of the Grant Assistance Program from the New York Association of Towns—so glad to have attended this workshop in Palmyra!
