Joseph County began as a Catholic lay organization to meet the needs of the poor in our community. More than 100 years later, we are staying true to our mission. Since 1904, we have expanded our programs and now serve more than 60,000 people each year. We provide food, rent and utility assistance, clothing and household goods vouchers, and beds (to children). Person-to-person service is critical to expanding our reach and serving our neighbors in need, that's why our the work of the Vincentian Help Line is so critical to the success of SVdP.

Monday through Friday, 10am–2pm, two volunteers are on the phones ready to help our neighbors in need by coordinating home visits. Sometimes that means coordinating food and friendship. Sometimes it's assessing a possible case for financial assistance (availability varies — check svdpsb.org for details). And sometimes it's simply answering questions about resources in the community.

A home visit is at the heart of what we do at St. Vincent de Paul.
When a neighbor reaches out for help, we don’t just offer a service—we come to you. We sit together, listen to your story, and take time to understand what you’re going through. Whether it’s help with rent, utilities, food, or something else entirely, we work with you to find a path forward.
We’re not social workers—we’re neighbors. Our goal is to walk alongside you during a difficult moment, offering support, respect, and care every step of the way.
