Slide 1: Detail of artwork by Angelo called “Silence is Golden.” Angelo has a statement that goes along with the piece, which includes: “This piece tells a story of consequence. Don’t be a nosy neighbor. Mind your own business. For every action, there’s a reaction.”

Slide 2: Detail of “We Are The World” by Robert Riege. Reflecting on the piece, Robert said: “I look at everything that’s going on in the world today, all the conflicts. I’m gonna stay strong no matter what the world throws at me. I want to show that we should come together as one.”

More sneak peaks! Details of artworks featured in the Civil Rights Heritage Center (1040 W. Washington in South Bend) exhibition opening this Tuesday, tomorrow, May 19th, with a reception from 6-7:30PM. All are welcome! Please help spread the word!

Slide 1: Detail of artwork by Edward Warren entitled “God is Love is God.” See the full piece along with 9 other artworks at The Civil Rights Heritage Center this Tuesday from 6-7:30PM. About the piece, Edwards says: “I’ve been carrying God in my heart since I was a kid. I know He put us on the earth for a reason. We have to stick by each other, no matter our race or color. That’s how we fight. That’s how we are able to resist.”

Slide 2: Detail of “Out West” by Chris “Buck” Buckley. Chris said the following when interviewed about the piece: “From my art, I can travel through time and space and memory. By painting my way into somewhere else, I am bucking the system.”

A new staff member, Vincent, started with us this week! The first reading from Sunday laid the groundwork for the week:

Thus says the LORD:
Share your bread with the hungry,
shelter the oppressed and the homeless;
clothe the naked when you see them,
and do not turn your back on your own.
Then your light shall break forth like the dawn,
and your wound shall quickly be healed;
your vindication shall go before you,
and the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard.
Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer,
you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am!
If you remove from your midst
oppression, false accusation and malicious speech;
if you bestow your bread on the hungry
and satisfy the afflicted;
then light shall rise for you in the darkness,
and the gloom shall become for you like midday.
-Isaiah 55

"People don't just decide to be messed up," a guest shared sagely, "it's a lot that's happened to them, to make them this way." He had come to apologize for throwing our phone across the office last week, upset at his parole officer on the other end of the line. It was a moment of reflection that comes with the stability of having a place to stay, where emotions can be witnessed and regulated. We are honored to see this every day, and it's why our motto is "Housing is Healing."
