There is no single definition of success—and no single path toward discovering what comes next.

“I started out not sure what I was doing or what I wanted to do, and now I have ideas about what I’m interested in.” —Kiana Preston

“I’ve always loved working on cars. I learned welding in my Career Technical Education classes.” —Kameron G.

In the Sonoma Index-Tribune’s latest feature on Hanna Academy, Kiana, Kameron G., and E.S. share how they are building confidence, developing new skills, and beginning to shape their futures.

Kiana is exploring health care through Santa Rosa Junior College. Kameron works at Sonoma Raceway and hopes to become a mechanic. E.S. is considering animation or creating a brand of her own.

Their stories reflect what meaningful support can make possible—not by deciding a young person’s future for them, but by giving them opportunities to explore, advocate for themselves, and choose their own direction.

Thank you to the Sonoma Sonoma Index-Tribune and reporter Daniel Johnson for sharing their voices, challenges, and triumphs.

Thank you to the Sonoma Index-Tribune / Sonomanews.com for sharing Sophia’s story.

This spring, Sophia Unciano graduated from Hanna Academy after becoming the first female student admitted to the school. In the article, Sophia shared that before Hanna Academy, she had “absolutely no clue” what she wanted to do. But once she arrived, she said she was “shown what actual support looks like.”

That support, paired with Sophia’s own accountability and determination, helped her discover new direction. Through Career Technical Education, she found an interest in welding, began working with Mellinger Engineering in Sonoma, and is now preparing for a four-month training program in nondestructive testing.

As Principal Courtney Jackson shared, Hanna Academy helped provide the vehicle, but Sophia is the one who got in and drove it forward.

Congratulations, Sophia. We are so proud to celebrate this milestone with you.

Grad season gave us a chance to celebrate more than the end of a school year. At Hanna Academy, staff recognized students who demonstrated meaningful academic, emotional, and personal growth throughout the year.

Each award reflected something worth honoring: effort, resilience, curiosity, kindness, progress, and the courage to keep moving forward.

Congratulations to our students. We see your effort, we celebrate your progress, and we are proud to walk alongside you.

For more than three decades, Mr. Ken Shepherd has been part of the life and heart of Hanna.

Since 1992, he has served as a teacher, coach, steady presence, and trusted guide for generations of young people. His impact can’t be measured only in years or titles. It shows up in the students who felt seen, the staff who learned alongside him, and the culture of care he helped shape.

As Mr. Shepherd retires this year, we want to thank him for the countless ways he has shown up for our students, our staff, and our Hanna community.

Thank you, Mr. Shepherd, for your dedication, consistency, and heart. You leave a mark that will continue to be felt for years to come.

Thank you to Lococo's Cucina Rustica for hosting us and helping make the evening feel so special.
