🇺🇸 Honoring Veteran Dwight O. Shields

Today, we find ourselves paying tribute to Dwight O. Shields, born May 28, 1929, who now rests peacefully in📍Section 3 of Mount Hope Cemetery in Solon, Ohio.

Dwight proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as an Airman First Class, spending most of his service time stationed in Japan…a long way from his hometown of Stony Bottom, West Virginia. Although he did not see combat, Dwight stood ready to serve his country whenever called upon.

He carried his pride as a veteran throughout his life. Even when he could no longer walk, he always found the strength to salute and stand for our flag…a true reflection of his enduring patriotism and love for country.

Honoring Our Heroes: William Schultz, World War I Veteran 🇺🇸

As we prepare for Wreaths Across America this December, we pause to remember one of Solon’s own—William Schultz, a World War I veteran who rests in 📍 Section 10 at Roselawn Cemetery.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on July 27, 1892, William Schultz answered the call to serve his country during the Great War. Enlisting in 1918 at the age of 25, he trained with Company A, Training Detachment, Valparaiso, Indiana, and later at the University of Maine in Orono. His service took him through a number of specialized Ordnance and Railway Artillery units across the United States and Europe—including assignments at Camp Hancock, Georgia; Camp Sherman, Ohio; and overseas with the American Expeditionary Forces from August 1918 to July 1919.

Following months of service supporting ammunition and artillery operations in France and Germany, William returned home and was honorably discharged on July 22, 1919.

After the war, William made his home in Solon—living on the corner of SOM Center Road and Russell Drive, back when SOM was still a dirt road. He lived a long and meaningful life, passing on May 19, 1969, at the age of 76.

This year, we invite you to join us in honoring William Schultz and all veterans laid to rest at Roselawn Cemetery. By placing a wreath, we remember their service, speak their names, and ensure that their legacy.
