Public Statement: Solon City Leadership Has Enabled Antisemitism, Shielded Extremism
Solon city leadership has actively undermined efforts to address growing antisemitism and radicalism within the community. Rather than responding with vigilance and moral clarity, city officials have chosen to protect the leadership of the Chagrin Valley Islamic Center (CVIC) — even as mounting evidence links its affiliated speakers, leaders, educators, and official statements from the mosque to hate-filled rhetoric and extremist ideology.
In September 2024, a community petition was launched urging city leaders to formally condemn CVIC for harboring and promoting radical and antisemitic teachings. Instead of responding with seriousness or dialogue, Mayor Ed Kraus issued an official city statement falsely accusing the petition of being “an attack on one faith.” This defamatory and politically motivated response was later revealed to have been issued at the personal request of CVIC leader Masroor Malik.
At a series of Solon City Council meetings starting on the one year anniversary of the October 7th Hamas attacks on October 7th, 2024, community members — including Jewish residents — courageously voiced concerns over CVIC’s programming, including documented antisemitic sermons and social media posts by both leaders at the mosque as well as affiliated speakers and organizations. Rather than being heard, these individuals were dismissed, silenced, or openly demonized:
Councilman Jeremy Zelwin interrupted speakers and falsely claimed First Amendment protections did not apply at the November 4th, 2024 city council meeting.
Councilman Bob Shimits mocked a concerned citizen in his statement during the October 21st, 2024 city council meeting, calling him a “misguided young man.”
Radical organizations such as CAIR and the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) were given space to speak unchecked, while Jewish voices were marginalized.
Perhaps most disturbingly, Councilman Zelwin was recorded acknowledging that CVIC leaders refused a private request to condemn antisemitism — and that Mayor Kraus’s public defense of CVIC was done at Malik’s behest. Zelwin further disparaged the petition’s author by name during the interaction.
On November 18, 2024, the city council chamber became the scene of an antisemitic assault.
Rather than reflect on how city leadership’s silence contributed to such escalation, Councilman Mike Kan responded by deleting public comments on his civic page — including those from the petition’s author and fellow council candidate Greg Greenspan. These actions are not only ethically indefensible — they are unconstitutional under the March 2024 Supreme Court ruling on social media censorship by public officials.
In March 2025, the Anti-Defamation League’s Cleveland chapter, under Regional Director Kelly Fishman, made matters worse by issuing a public statement of support for CVIC and affiliated speakers — dismissing the legitimate and well-documented concerns of the Jewish community. This statement was published in the Cleveland Jewish News on March 10th, 2025.
A member of the City of Solon’s Community Relations Committee (DEI Committee) reported that he witnessed members of the committee making disparaging and defamatory comments about Mark Liner, a resident who is not affiliated with the city of Solon’s government nor the Community Relations Committee. It is important to note that the committee is led by Mayor Ed Kraus, and both CVIC founder/leader Masroor Malik as well as ADL-Cleveland Regional Director Kelly Fishman are appointed members of this committee (appointed by Mayor Kraus).
We Demand the Following:
A public retraction and apology from Mayor Ed Kraus, Councilman Bob Shimits, Councilman Mike Kan, and Councilman Jeremy Zelwin for their role in enabling hate and suppressing public discourse.
A formal resolution by the Solon City Council condemning antisemitism and radical incitement in all its forms, including rhetoric from religious institutions.
An investigation into violations of First Amendment rights by Councilman Mike Kan and Councilman Jeremy Zelwin.
A reassessment of public statements issued by ADL-Cleveland, and calls for neutral oversight in matters of communal safety.
This is not about faith — it is about facts. It is about accountability. And it is about the right of every resident to speak up against hate without fear of being silenced or smeared by their own elected officials.
We will not be intimidated. We will not be quiet. We will continue to stand up — for truth, for community safety, and for the people of Solon.
