Did you know that Kenora Challenger was named in honor of the Challenger space shuttle in 1986? This tragedy hit close to home for hybridizer Gordon Leroux, whose wife was a teacher. The Challenger mission was particularly exciting because of the teacher in space program and it received tremendous popular attention. Christa McAuliffe was selected to be the first teacher to fly in space. She was selected from more than 11,000 applicants.

Dahlia: Kenora Challenger, A SC W breed by Gordon Leroux. You can read more about this world renowned hybridizer in the Federation of Northwest Dahlia Growers Hall of Fame. Click the link in the bio.

One incredible benefit to joining our club is the live demos from our legendary hybridizers. Last night's monthly club meeting Ken Greenway gave us his tips for taking cuttings to increase stock on your favorite tubers. AC dahlias are hybridized by Ken Greenway of Accent Dahlias in Snohomish, Washington. He begins by replicating the natural underground habitat by placing the tubers in a tray filled halfway with vermiculite or shavings. He keeps them in a warm, dark, and moist environment to "wake" up the tubers. Once the tuber has feeder roots and has a sprout he lays them flat in an individual vessel to let it grow in soil and under lights. Once the growth spurt has some leaf nodes he will cut the stem off the tuber and place it in Oasis cubes or root riot. Approx 21 days until the cutting takes root, he'll pot them up until they are strong enough to be planted outside.

Just a friendly reminder to check on those tubers. 🐁🐭🪤

Typically we want to check for rotted ones or ones that may need a spritz if they’re looking thirsty.

Hello fellow dahlia enthusiasts. Several of us are busy digging & diving tubers for winter storage.

For our new dahlia lovers, you do not have to dig and divide. We are lucky to live in a region that is considered the dahlia Mecca. Our mild climate allows us to keep them in the ground year round. Tips for success: dahlias don’t like wet feet and keep in mind underground critters love to snack on tubers.

For those of you that will dig and divide. Keep in mind it’s easier to spot eyes directly after digging.
