As a part of our ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the German Evangelical Society Cemetery on Cemetery Street in Washington Township, we have partnered with Dignified Monument & Marker Care LLC (Tamaqua, PA) to repair and restore the tombstones at this final resting place. Attached, you will see the first few tombstones that have been raised and attached to their bases. Thirteen more stones to go!

On This day in Slatington Area History...40 years ago today disaster struck Slatington when a 75-ton mobile crane lost its brakes descending the hill into Slatington and slammed into the Mountain View Apartments killing two residents and injuring three. The driver of the crane and his passenger were taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital Center. The crane, owned by Mayberry Riggers of New Jersey was on its way to New Jersey Zinc in Palmerton to pick up a nitrogen tank. After the building was shored up, and a 250-ton crane from Am Quip Corp. in Ben Salem arrived, the crane was removed from the building several days later on July 28.

A neat artifact that is currently being housed at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, New York.

A special exhibit, “Declaring the Revolution: America’s Printed Path to Independence” showcases a July 10, 1776 edition of ‘The Pennsylvania Journal and the Weekly Advertiser.’ In this edition, next to the printed Declaration of Independence, is a list of officers and privates who were delegated to convention. Slatington’s own Captain Nicholas Kern (misspelled Karn) is among those listed.

Just another reason to celebrate our area’s contributions to the American Revolution 250 years ago.

SAHS secretary Mike Hofmann Jr. visited Slatington’s sister city today!

Fair Haven, Vermont became Slatington’s sister city when the slate borough was celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2014. Both towns blossomed out of the slate industry, and are of similar size.

The downtown is bustling with shops and multiple churches located along the perimeter of the town square. Mike enjoyed lunch at The Wooden Soldier, a quality diner-style breakfast and lunch establishment that was previously half of a department store at the turn of the 20th Century.

The local historical society is planning a reading of the Declaration of Independence on July 2. While Mike won’t be staying in town for that event, he fully anticipates it to be well-attended. Well done to our friends in Fair Haven!

With the 2026 high school sports year behind us, it was once again time to update the Slatington Athletic History website! Check out a true labor of love of our secretary, Mike.

This website has been a labor of love for Mike Hofmann, local historian, since 2012. A graduate of Northern Lehigh in 2011, Hofmann compiled the first comprehensive sports history for Slatington's high schools as a part of the 150th anniversary celebration of the borough in 2014. Seeing that much

Earlier this week, we contracted Fischer Property Maintenance, LLC to repair the slate wall at the Williamstown Cemetery, part of our continued effort to rehabilitate this long-forgotten cemetery. Included are some before-and-after pictures.
