We had a great Block Kids event last weekend that included 45 kids and 45 amazing projects! Shout out to all the volunteers who made the day happen and a big thank you to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sioux Falls for once again partnering with us and hosting this event at the building annex!

🎶 Move over, New Kids on the Block had a bunch of hits...and now we've got a whole new generation of builders in town! 🧱

Our BLOCK KIDS spent the day designing, creating, and building some amazing projects while learning about the world of construction. The creativity, imagination, and innovation on display were incredible! Special thanks to all who made this possible!

A little about Shelbi:

1) What does being named NAWIC Member of the Year mean to you?
It’s an honor to be recognized by women I admire and respect. NAWIC has been a big part of my growth, both personally and professionally. I give my time because I care about this organization and the women in it, so receiving this recognition makes it even more meaningful.

2) How did you first get started in the construction industry?
My path into construction was a little different! I’m a registered nurse and worked in a men’s state prison for nearly 10 years. My husband, Neil, and I started Backhaus Excavation and Underground in 2016. I helped with the business while continuing to work as a nurse, then moved into the business full-time in 2022. Today, I handle our accounting, HR, and office management.

3) What’s one tool you could never live without?
My phone/digital calendar! Between running a business, coordinating community events, and keeping up with my family, it’s the tool that keeps everything connected. My work may happen mostly behind the scenes, but there’s always something to organize or someone to reach!

4) The best part of my job is ________.
Seeing what we’re building together—as a business, as a team, and as a family. I’m proud of our crew and the work they do, and I love knowing our projects make a lasting difference in our communities.

5) My favorite thing about NAWIC is ________.
The friendships and support. Being surrounded by women who understand the construction industry, share their knowledge, and cheer each other on is something special. Over the years, those connections have become much more than professional relationships—they’ve become friendships.
