VET DAY.

Not sure what I was expecting to hear, but I wasn't ready for this bit of news. I'll sum it up as best I can.

We did x-rays & got surgeon's input. Janie's tibias are turned outward; to look at her you see her toes point out. It's genetics & related to her patellas luxating (*remember, hers slide out vs. in). Simply put, the tibia's torsion pulls all the muscles & tendons causing the kneecap to pop out. She was born this way (thank you backyard breeder). We knew about the patellas, but had no idea this was the cause. Thankfully the surgeons felt knee surgery wasn't promising b/c had we done it, it would have been a waste.

Surgery, a Derotational Tibial Osteotomy, would entail cutting the bone in half, turning it back to normal position, & screwing the bones back together...on both legs. She'd have a visit (maybe visits?) w/a surgeon, need a CT, surgery on both legs, & lots of follow up & rehab. Guessing that's just the start.

It's a lot to think about. 😳🤯🥺

HAVING SURGERY:
* How many CTs? Is a 2nd one needed after surgery?
* Would 1 leg be done at a time or 2? Same time or separate surgeries?
* Anesthesia - under one very long time or twice?
* What if there is a complication w/a screw or plate & requires more surgery?
* What if there's infection?
* How would recovery go; can 1 leg handle another leg recovering? Can both legs heal properly if both done at same time (if that's even an option).
* If 1 leg at a time, will stress placed on the opposite leg worsen the condition?
* Can JANIE handle 16 or so weeks of tough recovery & rehab if it's done one at a time? Can she handle it if both done at one time?
* Would doing just 1 leg make a difference?
* What if it doesn't work?
* Can it be done locally?

- Would rid a lot of pain if successful
- A research paper says 96% success rate.

NO SURGERY:
* She'll be in a wheelchair sooner vs later
* She'd have increased issues w/joint pain & general pain
* Will be on meds the rest of her life (assuming she'd not w/surgery) which could lead to other problems.

She's 3.5yrs old. Just 3.5 yrs old.
My heart aches. 💔

Vet Day!! Today Janie saw Doc so he could take a peek at her knees. She had trouble the other night and was crying from pain, barely able to walk, so we took her in, despite being fine the next day. He said her knees are abnormally large…and large in the wrong places. But he really needs to be able to work those knees, and she needs to be asleep to do it properly.

Now if you’ll remember, Janie has bilateral luxating patellas, and they go “out” vs the normal “in” when the kneecap slips out of socket. Previous visits with the surgeons resulted in the suggestion that surgery would not help her bc of this. So we’ve let her be a dog and just watch her, understanding that in the future she’ll most likely need a wheelchair.

Janie has played and run and done everything dog, being the champion that she is…but she’s having a harder time now. So, next week we’ll take her in to be sedated so we can get some good pictures of those knees, and Doc can get his hands on them for a full ortho exam to see where we’re at.

If you will, please keep our sweet girl in your thoughts and prayers, please. We will update you as soon as we have results.

VET DAY!! Sweet Matilda was due for her annual, and we also wanted to recheck her eye socket and knee. She was a champ for everything, per usual, and came through with flying colors.

Her left eye socket has been full of fluid since about a year post enucleation, but even the ophthalmologist said no need to do anything unless painful. In the past few weeks, even though she's shown no amount of pain, we noticed it was enlarging even more. (i.e. filling with more fluid). So, had doc take a peek. Fortunately there's no need to worry or put her through surgery. That was a relief for our old gal and us, too.

Also checked her knee b/c she'd held it up a few times, but it thankfully felt strong. Guess we all have a few aches and pains as we age, huh? She's such a tough, stoic girl that it's hard to remember she's almost 12! (11yrs, 8mths). 😮 Not discouraging for our little Mattie Moo, though...she still rules the kingdom. 👑

Just look at her adorable grey muzzle! 😍🥰
