Here are some fun facts about the Tennessee state mammal the RACCOON!

-In 1971, the Raccoon was adopted as Tennessee’s official wild animal.
-Raccoons living in Tennessee measure 30-38 inches long (including their tails) and weigh 12-25 pounds.
- Nocturnal and generally solitary, raccoons walk like bears and are good swimmers.
-Distinctive in appearance with their masks and striped tail, the raccoon is as comfortable in urban areas as in the deep woods. In the wild raccoons live in caves, tree hollows and ground burrows. In urban areas they are found in attics, chimney flues, culverts under roadways, or wherever they can find a safe, dry and reasonably comfortable niche.
-The raccoon is omnivorous and will eat just about anything including insects, frogs, fish, birds, small mammals and the leftovers discarded in your trash can (which they can be exceedingly clever at extracting)

Last night (5/30/25) I was driving on Miles Road in Walden (TN) about 10:45 pm when I saw several puppies on the side of the road trotting ahead of me. They were darting in and out of the woods, and were difficult to count but I estimated there six to eight of them. Upright ears and tails with little hair on them. Coyote pups. I did not see an adult with them, but I am sure they were not alone. Usually, a pair of breeding coyotes will have a litter of four to six. Here is a link to a webinar Eastern Coyotes from the Wolf Conservation Center in NY state.

Join the Wolf Conservation Center on June 9, 2021 at 7 pm ET for a free webinar about eastern coyotes, their history and ecology, and what we can do to best coexist with them.
