The purpose of the Zion Baptist Church: My Brother’s Keeper project (named after the President Obama’s initiative) is to promote the educational success for underserved males of color through five key components: mentoring, career development, tutoring, college preparation assistance, and healthy lifestyle awareness. There is currently no program in area that caters to the unique needs of males of

color. These unique needs stem from high occurrences of fatherless homes, dropout rates, and low socioeconomic status. Research contends that only 31 percent of males of color live in a home with a father present (Cartwright and Henriksen, 2012). Even more tragic, approximately 80% of Louisiana’s dropouts are African American (www.picardcenter.org). The MBK project will expose participants to a variety of opportunities that will increase their likelihood of success in high school and beyond- taking heed from President Obama’s call to action and “providing the support they need to think more broadly about their future. Building on what works – when it works, in those critical life-changing moments” (Obama, 2014)
