National Specially-Abled Pets Day 💙🐾
Sadly, specially-abled pets in shelters are often overlooked because they need extra care—but with that extra care comes extraordinary love.
Specially-abled pets come in all forms: three-legged dogs who run like the wind, blind cats who navigate by heart, deaf pups who communicate through touch, pets with mobility challenges, chronic conditions, or neurological differences. Each has unique needs, but they ALL bring immeasurable joy.
Meet Karah, one of our board member's beloved cats. Raised as a bottle baby alongside her brother, Karah didn't hit kitten milestones like he did. Stabilizing on her feet took longer. Eating and drinking were harder—she couldn't steady her head and "pecked" at her food like a little bird.
Karah has cerebellar hypoplasia (CH)—often called "wobbly cat syndrome." Her cerebellum, the part of the brain controlling coordination and balance, didn't fully develop. CH is non-progressive, non-painful, and non-contagious. It just makes life a little wobblier.
Karah walks with a loud, high-stepping, off-balance gait. Running? An awkward trot or flopping sprint. Jumping sometimes sends her backward instead of up. Her head bobbles constantly—especially when she's excited.
But here's the beautiful truth: Karah has no idea she's different.
She's wildly happy and affectionate. She loves giving kisses (but has to hold your face still because in her mind, YOU'RE the wobbly one!). She needs ramps or a way to climb to reach high places, fuller food bowls so she doesn't bonk her nose, and patience with mealtime messes. That's it.
In return? Pure, unfiltered joy. Unconditional love. A reminder that different doesn't mean less.
Specially-abled pets like Karah are harder to place, but they're some of the most rewarding companions you'll ever meet. Whether it's a wobbly cat, a tripod dog, or a senior with special needs—they all have one thing in common: they bring incredible joy.
If you have space in your home and heart, check your local rescue. These incredible souls are waiting for someone to see past their differences and into their beautiful spirits.
Adopt love. Adopt differently-abled. Adopt joy. 🐾💛
