September is ***dePreventionMonth, and as your Sheriff’s Office, we want to remind our community that su***de prevention is something we can all be part of.

Our deputies are often called when someone is experiencing a crisis. While we are here to respond when help is needed, prevention starts long before a 911 call. Creating a safer environment at home, recognizing warning signs, checking in with someone who may be struggling, and knowing where to turn for help can make a difference.

One important part of prevention is reducing access to potentially dangerous items during times of crisis.

💊 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘁. Unused or expired prescription medications can pose a risk if they are accidentally or intentionally accessed by someone who should not have them.

You can dispose of unwanted medications safely and securely:
1️⃣ Pharmacy drop box
2️⃣ Take-back events
3️⃣ MED-Project Drop boxes (main Sheriff's Office in McMinnville, Amity City Hall Substation, Dayton City Hall Substation, and Sheridan City Hall Substation)

Our deepest condolences to Rod’s family, friends and SW Polk Fire

It is with profound sadness that the Southwest Polk Fire District announces the passing of longtime Board President Rod Watson.

Rod served the Southwest Polk Fire District Board of Directors for 32 years, many of those years as President. Few individuals have had a greater or more lasting influence on the direction, culture, and future of our Fire District.

Rod believed deeply in service to his community and in doing things the right way. Throughout his years of leadership, his guidance was consistent: take the high road, do what is right, and always remember who we are here to serve. That philosophy became more than advice; it became part of the standard by which our District operates.

During his tenure, Rod played a key role in many of the District’s most significant accomplishments. His leadership helped bring three new fire stations to the District, strengthen regional fire services, establish ambulance services, and secure funding to hire additional firefighters and staff the Bridgeport Fire Station.

Rod was more than a Board President. He showed up. He attended District events, supported our firefighters and staff, and remained deeply invested in the people and communities we serve. It was a privilege to work alongside him, and his legacy cannot simply be measured by his accomplishments. It lives on in the organization he helped build, the lives he influenced, and the standard of integrity he left for us to follow.

Outside the Fire District, Rod was the owner of RG Watson Farms, a respected member of the Rickreall community, a husband, a father of four, and the proud grandfather of twenty. His dedication to family, agriculture, community, and public service reflected a life centered on service to others.

The Southwest Polk Fire District extends its deepest condolences to Rod’s family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his friendship and service.

President Watson, thank you for 32 years of extraordinary service, leadership, friendship, and unwavering commitment to this District and its people.

Your watch has ended, but your legacy will remain with us always ❤️

***Quick clarification from yesterday’s post: When I said we were $3,500 “in the negative,” I meant our expenses exceeded our income for the month. Our bank account is not in the hole. Most months we are in the black, which allows us to build our reserves, take on medical cases, and grow our programs. Last month, we had to pull from those reserves, something we work very hard to avoid.

I apologize if my wording caused any confusion.***

We’re back from a few days away, but we’re still laying low. Unfortunately, while we were taking a much-needed break, the numbers reminded us that the rescue doesn’t take a break.

We ended last month more than $3,500 in the negative.

We work hard to stay out of the red each month so we can keep helping animals and growing our community programs, but last month hit us hard. Darth Vader’s vet care, Hunny’s dental, Cherry’s eye surgery, the Ice Cream Pie litters’ infections, fixing cats and kittens who haven’t found homes yet, and paying upfront for our hoodie order all added up.

But here’s the good news: an incredible supporter has given us a $5,000 MATCH.

🚔 PUBLIC SAFETY

* Salem: Police continue investigating a fatal West Salem shooting. A 16-year-old suspect was arrested Tuesday and faces a murder charge.

🔥 WILDFIRE & FIRE SAFETY

* Yamhill County remains under a burn ban. YCOM’s current notice directs residents to check the county burn line for the latest burning status.
* Fire season remains in effect on ODF-protected lands in Northwest Oregon. Cooler, wetter weather has helped, but conditions can change quickly.
* Reminder: Never assume that a recent shower means conditions are safe for outdoor burning. Check local restrictions before doing any burning.

🌫️ AIR QUALITY

Smoke and air quality conditions can change quickly with regional wildfire activity. If you smell or see smoke, check current AQI conditions before spending extended time outdoors.

🚧 ROADS & TRAVEL

ODOT’s current statewide road report does not show a major new Yamhill County closure this morning. Travelers should still check conditions before heading out, particularly on Highway 18, Highway 99W and I-5.

🌉 AROUND NEWBERG

Work continues at Hess Creek Preserve, where the first of two planned bridges has now been installed.

Schools will be closed Monday, September 7, for Labor Day.
