SHERMAN, Texas (KTEN) — The November election is right around the corner, and Texas voters are being reminded about recent changes in the rules.
A public service group called Civics 101 hosted a Monday evening meeting to review the changes.
"Having some kind of knowledge of how government works and who has power for different functions of government or different issues is very vital to being able to address issues that come up or people have," said voter education advocate Amy Hoffman.
Those who did not vote in the March election will find that early voting hours are increased in the general election, but there are now stricter rules for absentee ballots and increased autonomy for partisan poll watchers.
"This class is not partisan," said Denison resident Kurt Cichowski. "It is not going to take one side or the other; it's going to explain the facts of what it is that was recently passed from the Texas Legislature and how is it going to affect the election for this upcoming November".
"It just makes the process easier if people are prepared in advance," Hoffman added. "We'll even have a timeline on what you should do starting September 1st to prepare and make sure that you are registered at the correct address and if you need to make any corrections or changes... when you need to do all that by."
Civics 101 hopes to do more events to better serve the region.
