This is the typical fall ŵildflower mix - a combination of Goldenrods and Asters in colors of gold, white and purple. I haven't done positive ID on the Asters and Goldenrods but likely their are 4 different species for each.

10/9/22 - Heath Aster (Symphyotrichum ericoides). When this one blooms it looks like it's covered with snow. Although the flowers are small, Asters are the last fall nectar resource for pollinators.

10/9/22 - Monarchs!
Last week there were no Monarchs in the meadow. I was starting to worry if there were any left. Well, they showed up this week. Its a lesson in plant diversity. If I were counting on Maximilian Sunflower to supply these butterflies on their way south they would have missed out. Those flowers were done over a week ago. It didn't matter because the Sawtooth Sunflowers got it done. I think I saw 5 or 6 Monarchs on each clump at the same time. It was definitely magical seeing that many butterflies in one place.

10/2/22 - Two of the best things about fall are perennial sunflowers - Swamp Sunflower (Helianthus angustifolia) in front and Sawtooth Sunflower (Helianthus grosseserratus) in back. Both like wetter ground and these are located in the bog area. The Sawtooth is a beast, stand at 10 feet tall.

9/18/22 - Late Boneset (Eupatorium serotinum). Easy from seed. Great for pollinators.

Whoa! That's a pairing you don't see often. The brief wet spell we had in late August caused some spring bloomers to wake up from their summer nap. 9/18/22

9/18/22 - No fall season is the same without these two Salvias. Most blue flowers kinda just blend into the greens and get overlooked but when you have so much yellow around they seem to pop out more. Both of these natives are available in the nursery trade and commonly used in landscapes.

9/18/22 - Maximilian Sunflower (Helianthus maximiliani). When I was planning the meadow, I wanted this plant to be one of the "cornerstone" species. It comes up easily from seed so its easy to overplant it in a project. It looks so great in September. It's a huge energy source for migrating Monarch butterflies up north but these had finished blooming by the time they came through here headed to Mexico.

Stiff Goldenrod (Oligoneuron rigida). This is one of 4 or 5 goldenrod species in the meadow (not yet sure exactly how many). They all are important fall nectar resources for all pollinators (bees, butterflies, wasps, beetles, flies, etc.)
