Welcome to “100 Things Every Black Girl Should Know”. This virtual community is a pre-cursor awareness campaign that precedes a book of the same title written by Veteran songwriter and first time author, Taura Stinson. The book is due August 2017, but the conversation begins now! We wholeheartedly subscribe to the old adage “It takes a village…”, but not just to raise a child. It also takes a village to encourage, celebrate, heal, empower and support one another, as Black women.
That does not mean that we are racists, in fact, this community supports people of all colors but we recognize the huge pay gap between Black women and White males. According to www.AAUW.com, “Black women were paid 63 percent of what non-Hispanic white men were paid in 2015”, but that’s not all!
Black women are 43% more likely to die from Breast Cancer (Time Magazine) and among all women diagnosed with HIV in 2014, an estimated 62% (5,128) were African- American(CDC). We also only make up 8% of the population, yet 22% of homicides that result from Domestic/Intimate Partner Violence, happen to black women(ncadv.org). Lastly, according to www.CDC.Gov, “Every year, Americans suffer more than 1.5 million heart attacks and strokes. Nearly 44% of African American men and 48% of African American women have some form of cardiovascular disease that includes heart disease and stroke.”
Take a deep breath, because I know that was a lot of heavy information to take in at one time, but there is immense light at the tunnels end. According to the Census Bureau, “By both race and gender, there is a higher percentage of Black Women enrolled in college than any other group” and that is fuel for this luminous fire being sparked by women and girls just like you around the world.
Our motto in this village is “Knowledge is power” and we are counting on each one of you that join the community to live by those three words, because it is as simple as this. If you don’t know…you don’t know, so we want to bridge the gap between ignorance and knowledge on every subject brought to the discussion table by each of you.
Our goal is to change the narrative and turn negative statistics completely around.
Our goal is for Mother’s that are having a hard time communicating with their daughter or daughters having a hard time communicating with their Mother’s to find common ground and learn to speak a language that they both can understand.
Our goal is for resources available to US to be highlighted and shared. Our goal is to support Black female businesses and services but ultimately, our goal is to share our mistakes so that girls, young women or even Grandmother’s may learn from them, rather than repeating them.
