Kayak fishing is at the center of what we do, but the mission has always been about more than catching fish.

Heroes on the Water provides veterans, active-duty military members, first responders and their families with a place to step away from everyday demands and spend time outdoors with a community that understands service.

Our volunteer-led chapters make these experiences available in communities across the country, at no cost to participants and with no previous kayak fishing experience required.

On Purple Heart Day, Heroes on the Water honors the men and women who were wounded or killed in service to our country.

The Purple Heart represents sacrifice that cannot be measured only by the medal itself. It carries the weight of what was endured, the families who stood beside those who served and the lasting impact that service can have long after the moment of injury.

Today, we recognize every Purple Heart recipient, remember those who did not return home and honor the courage of the military community they represent.

To the Purple Heart recipients within the Heroes on the Water community and across the country, thank you for your service and sacrifice.

There is solid science behind what many in the HOW community already recognize: time in nature, near water can help reduce stress and create space to reset.

At a HOW event, that benefit is paired with movement, purpose and connection.

The research matters. So do the ordinary moments it helps explain: a quiet paddle, an easier conversation and a good day shared with others.

What's one word that describes how you feel out on the water?

Each chapter is unique but our mission is the same: serve those who served.

Today, we're reflecting on one simple idea:

This community changes lives.

Through consistent support, shared experiences, and time spent in intentional environments that foster meaningful connection, the lives of veterans, first responders and their families, are changed for the better.
