🌊 Shore Friendly Friday – Species Spotlight 🐟

Next time you’re walking along a beach in Mason County, take a closer look at the upper shoreline, the area where waves meet the sand and gravel. That’s where forage fish like surf smelt and sand lance lay their eggs.

Shorelines that remain intact help protect spawning habitat for these small but important fish by allowing natural changes like erosion to occur. These natural changes provide the sand-gravel mix forage fish need to lay their eggs.

Forage fish play an essential role in the Puget Sound food web supporting salmon, seabirds, and marine mammals.
