Thanks to Judi Humphrey for an outstanding program today. She brought Bill Bly and Bob Thomas who head up the Festival of Lights at Forest Park. Bill shared the joys and the hard work involved with setting up and maintaining the festival every year. There are over 450 displays which have to be prepared and set up with more being added each year.

We met on Monday, September 15 and enjoyed a good meal, good fellowship and an interesting program introduced by Jerry Yockey. Joshua Langlais from the Student Conservation Association presented the work being done on a wilderness trail north of the existing Dacy Trail. He showed photos of the team’s work and expressed a growing appreciation for working in the Midwest because of his experience in Shelbyville. He is from Maine and had never spent time in the heart land. He outlined the hard work and dedication of the team as they worked through the recent heat wave.

On Monday, August 11 our District Governor, Les Mitkos and Assistant Governor, Gary Swearingen visited the Shelbyville Rotary Club. Les presented our program and challenged us in the areas of membership, Rotary Foundation support and Polio Plus. He shared the good news that polio should be eradicated by 2018. Good news,
Indeed!

We met on Monday, July 7 and enjoyed good food, good fellowship, and a good program. Captain Monte Bowers, Illinois National Guard Chaplain and Associate Minister at First Christian Church came and shared from his experiences and work as a military chaplain. We learned a great deal about what it means to minister to military personnel and their families. Thank you Captain Bowers for presenting to the rotary club.

Rev. Kevin Ray was the program chairman last Monday. His talk was about the four-way test. He deconstructed the four-way test, something we refer to every day, into its true meaning. In addition, he approached the club with the question, “What do we want to do during his time in office - 2014/15?” Some of the proposals included: Rotary members at public events, support for the Sr. Citizen Center, reading to kids, associate membership for retirees, Rotary business exchange, Rotary informational booth at public events, Rotary/ Boy Scout breakfast, and finally, more P.R. for Rotary in the community.

Our program for last Monday was the announcement and presentation of the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. This year’s award winner is Judge Michael Kiley, a 30-year veteran of our Shelbyville Rotary Club, who has been known for his support and regular attendance at meetings. Recently, Mike presented the initiative for our club to publicly back sales tax proposal that raises money to support the construction and maintenance for the schools in our educational district. There are many here who feel that Shelbyville Rotary has helped to create a positive influence in the business community that helped put this tax referendum over the top. Club Treasurer, Liz Nohren, made the presentation in which she reminded us of the history behind the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. In attendance was Judge Kiley’s family, including his grandson, Travis. In appreciation of his service to our club and our community, Mike Kiley was presented with the Paul Harris medallion. Good work, Mike!

Today Jerry Yockey is our program chairman. His guest is Marla Eversole. Marla's topic today is about her blog "JustMaketheCoffee." It is a weekly blog-Internet diary-for the uninitiated. Her story revolves around "Happy Ass Farm," that is ass is in Donkey, as in Happy, her watch-donkey. Her blog tells about recipes, the assorted critters, and her husband, "Pig-Farmer." I went to the website this week and I see that "runt," has passed away. Our condolences. Featured on Marla's website was her presentation to our local Rotary club. So if you are eady for a little rest and reflection, while surfing the Internet, go to Marla's blog, JustMaketheCoffee, to get a sense of what it is like to live on the farm. Our thanks to Marla Eversole for it and entertaining presentation.
