May 25, 1979 One of the darkest days in North Carolina’s fire service history started as a smoke investigation in downtown Shelby around 6:15 p.m. Firefighters arrived in the 100 block of West Warren Street and found an apparently routine fire in the rear of Geoffrey’s Men’s Clothing Store. About thirty minutes into the incident, a sudden blast shook the store and sent bricks and glass flying into the streets. Walls had collapsed, firefighters were buried, and heavy fire and smoke was pouring from the rear of the two-story structure.

Four firefighters and a civilian gas department employee were dead. Another 12 firefighters were injured. Killed instantly in the street in front of the building were volunteer remember the fallen brothers

Here is the story of the Cleveland County F.O.O.l.S chapter on how it started and what it is about. Started with a group of guys from SFD wanting to get back to the roots and bring brother hood back to the fire services. We started the F.O.O.L.S. Chapter here in Cleveland country last year In March. WE started it because we wanted to give back to the fire service guys and help them progress in their careers with training and skills that we can pass along to one another, and give back to our community’s where we live and provide service in. Give back to them as they needed support and help. We sell our apparel like shirts, coins, stickers, and fire shields to raise money. To hold special classes or buy training props and bring new training ideas and techniques to our local fire departments to better them and make them more ready for what’s to come because we work for our community, and we are them to save them, and they turn to us to make the situation better, we are the problem solvers to them people look up to us like kids do when they see a firemen or a fire truck. We need to make sure we are always at our best and at our max. We own it to them cause the community expects it from us! But we hold meetings and get togethers to discuss things like ways to give back or ways to help like at, Christmas time we will pick a family in need and buy the family and kids food and toys because we are a family, we are one team, so we come together as one to help each other when in need the Cleveland county fools chapter was made for to train and help each other.
