Ronnie Speckner was homeless for four years. Up until last fall, he lived out of a tent in the woods. He mentioned times he slept in the snow in just a sleeping bag.

In April, 25 people exited to stable housing, helping us hit 100 stable housing exits for the year so far. That includes bringing some chronically homeless people off the streets.

The for this week is from 2003 when Seymour High School varsity cheerleader captains Lora Pollert, left, and Lauren Carr lead the way while carrying a large tote of supplies for Anchor House.

The 25 girls in the program visited Lutheran Community Home and Heritage House in Seymour to mingle with residents and offer up a few cheers before stopping by Anchor House to make a donation of canned and paper goods. Coach Carol Lambring said the projects taught the girls about community service and philanthropy.

In this from June 2004, James Braun and Brandon Schnarr of Christians in Action staple insulation as they help build a new food pantry for Anchor House.

They were among members of the Catholic youth service group comprised of parishes across Indiana completing the service project. They built two rooms within the warehouse at the Anchor House building at 250 S. Vine St., Seymour — one for much-needed office space and the other fro a climate-controlled food storage room. Four groups, a new one each day, worked Monday through Thursday sectioning off the warehouse, combining 2-by-4-inch boards to make the skeleton of the room and installing insulation.

At the time, the food pantry was open to anyone in Jackson County and served about 50 families each month, and the shelter hosted families with young children.

Construction was just one of the types of services offered by Christians in Action. The group previously served at adult day care centers and soup kitchens.
