We want to take a minute to recognize Tony Smith, a senior this year and someone a lot of our younger wrestlers have looked up to, whether they realize it or not.
You didn’t see Tony on the mat this club season because of injuries, but he’s still been part of this room. And that matters. The younger kids see who sticks around, who supports, who’s been through it.
Tony’s roots in this club run deep. His grandfather, Coach Art Osborn, built Marathon Wrestling Club and kept it going all these years. What we have today is because of him and what we’re trying to keep going is for him, too. This club has always been family-led. Jewel carried this club for years as president and made sure she was there to see Tony through his senior year before passing the torch. And with Tony’s dad, Coach Smith, leading as head coach… this program is built on family, and built to last.
Tony grew up in this room. 13 years in the sport, starting at 4 years old with his grandpa. That kind of time adds up.. not just in wins or matches, but in how you carry yourself. The younger wrestlers are watching that, even when you don’t think they are.
Marathon is proud of you, Tony. Thanks for being someone the next group can look up to. Excited to see what’s next for you after graduation. 💚💛
