Start School Later Start School Later™ is a registered 501(c)(3) organization committed to healthy and safe school start times. This is not a trivial matter. This needs to stop.

We're fighting for something we consider basic human rights--sleep, health, safety, and a chance for an appropriate education. Starting school in the 7 o'clock hour, a practice that began a few decades ago primarily to save money on bus runs, makes these things impossible for many adolescents and young adults in this country, who jeopardize their health, safety, and education at risk simply by goi

ng to school. Many people seem to forget that teenagers are still growing children (or even that they're human beings). School is not a job, and it is not a choice. Forcing teens to go to school at times that are incompatible with what we now know are shifted biological clocks, and a need for about 9 hours of sleep per night, is negligent, if not criminal. And we feel that the only way to stop it is a kind of child protection law similar to those set for child labor. A government limit on how early schools can open would make it easier for local school systems to do the right thing when they set schedules, instead of bowing to political pressures that currently keep most of them from changing school hours. We began back in 2011 with an online petition that is still in circulation. On March 7, 2012 we began delivering it to Washington DC in a series of "Wake Up Wednesdays" We are continuing these deliveries and setting up meetings with national, state, and local decision makers to raise awareness about the need for safe, healthy, humane school start times for all students, culminating in the passage of California's landmark "Start School Later" bill. But we're not done yet! We still have lots of work to do raising awareness, serving as a clearinghouse for information, and helping local communities move to safe, healthy school hours for all. As a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, we have three chief activities, all essential to our mission: education, research, and advocacy. For more information on our activities on all of these fronts, please see our website: www.StartSchoolLater.net.

By passing this resolution, the Michigan House is recognizing sleep deprivation as a serious health issue. And it’s pointing to things like adequate sleep and later school start times as ways to help both teenagers and adults get healthier sleep.

S/O to Start School Later Michigan for helping getting this done!

In today’s Health Alert, Michigan lawmakers are recognizing June 11th as Sleep Deprivation Awareness Day. The goal is to draw attention to a growing health problem affecting both teens and adults.

If districts can switch to four‑day weeks (and mounting early-dismissals, professional development, and student-free days), they can start high school at 8:30. Let’s stop using “disruption” as an excuse to ignore student health.

Four-day school weeks attract attention and debate. Traditional calendars packed with student-free weekdays deserve it, too.

Findings from the first meaningful evaluation of California’s school start time law are a milestone for communities across the country considering similar statewide policies.

A new statewide analysis brings the rigor this policy has long deserved, moving us past anecdotes and toward evidence—while reminding us how much more we still need to learn.

“A lot of the speculation people have (about later start times) is countered by actual data,” she said. “Kids do not stay up later. They do get more sleep.”

Exactly!

WHEELING – Members of the public told Ohio County Board of Education members Monday night they do not want later school start times in the district, even if an extra half-hour of sleep might benefit young minds. Thirteen delegations spoke before the board, with nearly all expressing strong opposit...

Families shouldn't have to choose between their child's health and their child's learning (not to mention following the law).

My daughter doesn't get enough sleep because her schedule is jam-packed. I worry that school starts too early for her, so I let her sleep in.

Congratulations to Ecem Karaarslan, a student at Ludlow High School in Massachusetts, the newest member of our Student Hall of Fame. Ecem wrote a well reasoned, well evidenced plea for later school start times, emphasizing how too-early hours affect students’ attendance, academic performance, and focus in school.

Students around the United States (and beyond!) are working for more reasonable school start times, and, in some cases, are leading the charge to change policy and improve the health, safety, and...

Asking people to speculate on how a change might affect their business is usually not the smoothest path to making a change in the interest of childrens' health, safety, and well-being. It's better to look at what actually happens when schools change their hours (which they do all the time, both earlier and later, and for all kinds of reasons), and how well communities inevitably adapt.

WHEELING – The Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce wants to know what its members think of the proposal that Ohio County Schools start and end each day a half hour later. Last week, a committee studying school start times recommended the change to the Ohio County Board of Education. Jennifer Materko...

Under the updated proposal, students in grades 7 through 12 would begin school around 8:45 a.m., compared to the current 7:35 a.m. start time. Elementary students in pre-kindergarten through third grade would start at approximately 8:15 a.m., while students in grades 4 through 6 would begin at 7:45 a.m.

Baldwinsville CSD is considering letting older students start school later in the day. Some students say it's all about getting enough sleep.
