Coach's Corner
Topic 103: Let's Talk Tears
- Crying does not always represent a weakness.
- Calling someone a baby or shaming a player will not keep them from crying or help them build resilience to urges to cry in the future.
- There is something primal and instinctive in highly competitive spaces that elevates emotions, some people respond with tears.
- Prep in practice. Be as ready as possible and mimic the game-like intensity during practices and scrimmages.
- Learn & set an example by controlling your own emotions. Sometimes tears are the most appropriate response. From winning championships, to last games played, to returning from an injury...we are humans, not robots.
- Encourage players to control their breath by bringing the hands above the head to open up the lungs and expand the diaphragm.
- If tears are keeping a player from competing, set a goal to shorten the time between the emotional break needed and continuing to play. Ex: a player leaves the floor crying & they need 3minutes to catch their breath and be ready to play again. After the game/practice set age appropriate goals to be ready to play within 2minutes.
- Building resilience is something that happens within, be a resource to players who may not have the tools yet.
- Bring in experts who can teach you and your players how to handle the bigger stages like

The end of every season brings a time for reflection. There is ALWAYS something to celebrate and AlWAYS something to improve on. I like to focus on the wins unrelated to the scoreboard. And then separating the need for improvement into two main areas - what the team can do and what an individual can do.
My favorite part of basketball, is the next play. The potential it holds. And the opportunities waiting. So, whether it was a slam dunk or an air ball, the next play is waiting.

Coach's Corner
Topic 103: Team Bonding
It's an activity designed to enhance the closeness of a team. A big part of the Wild Things basketball vision is to help girls feel like they have a place to belong. That sense of belonging and safety is essential in building confidence for the next level of competition.
Team Bonding activities can be done in small moments, woven into practice plans. Or it can be done over weekend getaways, sharing a meal, or having a dance party.
The teams that do this gain something you could never buy...friendship and acceptance of people as they are. This understanding carries over onto the court and creates that click between players..a flow, a rhythm, a synchronicity. It helps teams see wins/losses as a team endeavor over a certain player, coach, or referees fault.
Players should know each other's names. You're more than just a number.

Coach's Corner
Topic 102: Strength Training all year round
- Building strength doesn't have a season. Go for a hike, hit the gym, go for a swim!
- Turn it up in the off season, turn it down during season. There is no "off" button.
- Strength training doesn't only mean lifting weights. Mix it up! Give your muscles something to do and try something new. Better coordination makes a better basketball player.
- Strength helps you run faster & jump higher. Try side lunge, curtsy lunge, & weighted lunges.
- Strength training is safe for kids when done right. Shout out to BEE fit & Gritworks Athletics
- Strength training stacked consistently with basketball training prepares you for the elite level.
- Not sure where to start? Try a no BS approach to calisthenics with your players and see a big impact with no equipment necessary.

Coach's Corner
Topic 101: Indoor v Outdoor
-Yes, you should have shoes that you ONLY wear inside. Clean floors + cleans shoes
-Yes, you should have a basketball that is ONLY used indoors. Hoop smarter.
-Outside courts are great for practice and fun, keep it at about 85% speed to prevent any injuries due to slipping. Most outdoor courts don't have correct dimensions of court size or hoop size, be aware that it will feel different in a game.
