“We know these programs have one thing in common: They create empathy. The secret sauce of creating empathy is sharing a risk. Going to prison is a risk that our volunteers take. Being vulnerable in a restorative justice circle is a huge risk for people in prison. It is this shared risk that creates empathy, and empathy can change people’s lives.”

👏👏👏 Gov. JB Pritzker has signed into law House Bill 4639, requiring courts, not just the state’s attorney, to consider alternatives to sentencing in juvenile cases. The goal of restorative justice programs is to provide opportunities to identify and repair harm. The bill also addresses efforts to reduce further harm in the community through hands-on programs.
