Did you know that women consistently earn less than men while doing the same work and sometimes more? That means trying to get a head in life with less.
While Analyzing the most recent Census Bureau data, White women earn, on average, just 82 cents for every $1 earned by white man. This calculation is the ratio of median annual earnings for women working full time, year round to those of their male counterparts. This translates into a gender wage gap of 18 cents.
According to the Center for American progress, the wage gap is much larger for women of color with black women earning 62 cents on the dollar and Hispanic or Latino women earning just 54 cents on the dollar.
This has a significant adverse impact on families and our economy. This practice has been illegal since 1963 under the Equal Pay Act. The Ellison Outreach Foundation is looking to level the playing field as we embark on an aggressive mission to providing micro-grants, training, and support to help 10,000 women who will start businesses throughout the United States.
