CREATE48 Media Network has reached an agreement with King County to support continued operations at Harbor Island Studios.

This agreement helps preserve a critical regional production asset while advancing workforce pathways in King County’s creative economy.

Kirk Nordenstrom and Kris Flink know this takes a village. CREATE48 is deeply grateful to County Executive Girmay Zahilay and his staff, Councilmembers Claudia Balducci and Teresa Mosqueda, the King County Film Advisory Board, and the many industry and community partners whose work continues to grow and strengthen our creative economy.

The Seattle 48 Hour Film Project kickoff will be the first public-facing event at Harbor Island Studios under CREATE48’s management.

Harbor Island Studios is at an important moment, and meaningful work is already underway to secure a viable path forward.

The King County Film Advisory Board (KCFAB), formerly EFAB, is working closely with the King County Council, the Executive’s office, and industry stakeholders to address the structural, legal, and funding challenges facing the studio. KCFAB has led the charge for nearly every major improvement at Harbor Island Studios—from the new roof and soundproofing to the mill and core production infrastructure—and continues to steward the studio with the long-term interests of both the community and the County in mind.

We want to acknowledge—and sincerely thank—everyone who has expressed a desire to help. That commitment matters, and it is noticed. There will be moments ahead when more direct, coordinated action is called for. For now, however, the most effective way to support Harbor Island Studios is to keep it thoughtfully front of mind with the King County Council and Executive while solutions are actively being developed.

This is not a moment to overwhelm elected officials. It is a moment for steady, respectful engagement. KCFAB and other industry stakeholders encourage community members to reach out to their King County representatives to express gratitude for past and ongoing support of Harbor Island Studios and the King County creative economy. Brief, personal messages—especially those sharing lived experiences working at Harbor Island or building a career here—are particularly impactful.

A unified voice is essential. Aligning with KCFAB’s efforts and reinforcing a single, clear message helps ensure that Harbor Island Studios continues to be understood as the vital public asset, workforce engine, and economic driver it has proven itself to be.
