BIG news: Northwest Health Law Advocates and Neighborhood House are suing the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services over the new Medicaid policy that would defund critical health and long-term care services for immigrants with serious health needs beginning October 1.

We filed the lawsuit on Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Seattle, and today we filed a motion requesting a preliminary order to postpone implementation of the Medicaid policy for impacted Washingtonians until the court can fully review the lawsuit. "Alleman added that she has kept her plan, even though it now costs $300 more per month. The rise comes after Congressional Republicans allowed federal health care subsidies to expire last year. The more expensive plan also means she has to meet a $10,500 out of pocket maximum before coverage kicks in. The Lincoln, Nebraska resident now finds herself skipping follow-up care, including specialist visits and diagnostic tests, because she cannot afford it.

On Oct. 1, 2026, in WA alone, 1,300 older adults and people with disabilities are expected to lose their long-term care, and 14,000 immigrant Washingtonians will lose their health care due to federal policy changes. Access to care keeps us safe and alive. It enables us to care for our families, hold jobs, provide essential services, contribute to our economy, and participate in our communities.
