We are going to share some of the stories IFJC received during the Pandemic.
Case 3: She has been staying in the U.S. without visa or green card since she was married to a U.S. citizen 20 years ago. When she had her first child, her green card application was pending but she went to her country for an extensive period of time with the child due to her health issues. When she came back to the U.S. with the child with an expired travel permit, her green card application was denied. Her husband has refused to have her re-apply for a green card to prevent her from going out of the U.S. When she mentioned divorce, the husband shot her in the leg. The incident was reported as an accident, but she fled from the family home with the children as soon as she was released from the hospital. She wants to file for a divorce to be free from the husband.

Case 2: She is educated in Japan. She met her husband in Japan and had a child in Japan. After the child was born, she moved to U.S. with him and decided to stay at home. He became very violent, by breaking things in the house and leaving her and her 2 year old child in a woods whenever he was mad at her. She and her child were often forced to stay at her friend house over night as a result. When he started having an affair with someone, he withdrew all money from the parties’ joint account. He then demanded that she jointly signs a petition for divorce and waives her rights to community assets and maintenance, in exchange for her right to custody of the child. She has limited ability to speak English and has no money to retain a lawyer.

Case 1: The client was sexually assaulted by a man which resulted in having a daughter. The client raised the daughter by herself until the daughter turned 15, but the man/father who sexually assaulted her suddenly pursued a court action to obtain a full custody of the daughter. CPS investigation was done but found out that CPS was associated with the father's work, and the client lost custody due to the falsified evidence. Now the daughter fearfully contacted the mother/client telling the mother she was given drug to make her sleep and sexually assaulted by her father. The client needs help to modify the parenting plan and regain custody of her daughter for her safety.
