We are proud to honor Juneteenth ahead of Friday’s U.S. Soccer MNT vs Football Australia in the FIFA World Cup match in Seattle.

Today, alongside King County Executive Girmay Zahilay, Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson, Seattle City Attorney Erika Evans, the Juneteenth Matchday Advisory Committee, Black Players for Change, BlackPast.org, NAAM, and community leaders, we gathered to uplift the history, meaning, and legacy of Juneteenth, and to recognize the responsibility and opportunity of hosting the U.S. Men’s National Team on this national holiday.

From local Black artists Damon Brown aka CreativeLou and Samray Estifanos, to community programming, education, youth engagement, and cultural celebrations across the city, this moment is about more than a match. It is about honoring Black history, celebrating Seattle’s Black community, and using the world’s biggest sporting event to create lasting impact.

This Seattle staple needs no sign on its iconic door 🐋🚪

Tucked away in Pike Place Market, The Pink Door has been welcoming guests since 1981. Behind its pink entrance is a restaurant that’s part dinner, part theater, and entirely Seattle.

Founded by Jackie Roberts and inspired by her Italian roots, it’s the kind of place locals recommend to friends, family, and apparently even CEO Peter Tomozawa, who counts it as his favorite restaurant in the city. His order? The pappardelle, clams and mussels, and the everything green salad.

Today I joined community leaders and partners to recognize the significance of Friday’s Juneteenth match between the USA and Australia.
 
The fact that a World Cup match falls on Juneteenth gives us a rare opportunity to celebrate both a global event and a deeply important part of our nation’s history. It is a chance to honor the freedom, history, culture, and resilience of African Americans in Seattle, King County, and across our country.
 
This Friday and throughout the weekend, I hope residents and visitors take time to attend the celebration at Pier 58 and the many Juneteenth events happening across King County.

In this episode of Juneteenth XI, former U.S. Men’s National Team player and broadcaster Maurice Edu reflects on what Juneteenth means to him, the players who inspired his journey, and the pride that comes with representing your country.

On the 19th, he’ll be in Seattle cheering on the USA and hoping the next generation of athletes see themselves reflected on the pitch.

Arte Noir in the Central District is a must stop while exploring Seattle. 🐋🎨

What began as an editorial called Black Canvas has grown into a gallery, gift shop, creative space, and community hub showcasing the work of Black artists and entrepreneurs from Seattle and beyond.

For Executive Director Jazmyn Scott, who grew up in the Central District and attended Garfield High School, having Arte Noir on 23rd and Union is a dream realized.

This summer, they’ll bring that same spirit to the World Cup with a Juneteenth watch party and community market.

For the next three weeks, Pacific Place becomes a free, all-ages home for FIFA World Cup 2026™ fans from Seattle and around the world.
