“India has long been an intriguing market for wild Alaska po***ck, but the lack of an established presence in the marketplace and concerns over cold chain logistics have thus far limited exports of wild Alaska po***ck products that are consumed within the country,” GAPP outoing CEO Craig Morris said. “We very much appreciate the USDA’s support to help us execute this market research and obtain on-the-ground intelligence that can help GAPP chart a path for increased exports of Alaska Po***ck to India.” - SeafoodSource

We’re pleased to see Undercurrent News covering GAPP’s latest initiative to better understand the potential for Wild Alaska Po***ck surimi in India.

With support from the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service’s Emerging Markets Program, GAPP has issued an RFP for comprehensive market assessment research to evaluate both the opportunities and barriers for surimi seafood in the Indian market. India represents a dynamic and growing market, and this research will provide the on-the-ground intelligence needed to chart a thoughtful, strategic path forward.

As global demand grows for high-quality, sustainable protein, Wild Alaska Po***ck is well positioned to meet that need. This work is an important step in ensuring our industry continues to explore new markets with a data-driven approach.

Thank you to USDA for their partnership and to Undercurrent News for highlighting this effort.

Lent 2026: Po***ck Powers the Menu - As the Lenten season kicks off, seafood is back in the spotlight across U.S. restaurants — and once again, Wild Alaska Po***ck is leading the way.

From McDonald’s Filet-O-Fish to Burger King’s Big Fish, Jack in the Box’s Moby Jack, White Castle sliders, Taco John’s fish tacos, and Dairy Queen’s Wild Alaskan Fish Sandwich, po***ck is the whitefish of choice across quick-service chains nationwide.

While shrimp, flounder, and cod also play important roles in seasonal promotions, po***ck continues to anchor the category — particularly in value-driven limited-time offers (LTOs).

And that’s not accidental.

Lent creates a predictable surge in seafood demand. For restaurant operators, success during this window requires:

• Reliable year-round supply
• Consistent portion performance
• Mild flavor that appeals broadly
• Strong price-to-value equation
• Trusted sustainability credentials

Wild Alaska Po***ck delivers on all five.

What’s especially notable this year is the emphasis on value innovation. Industry leaders speaking at the Global Seafood Market Conference reinforced that LTOs are critical to driving traffic amid heightened consumer price sensitivity. Po***ck’s versatility and cost stability make it an ideal platform for those promotions.

In uncertain economic moments, operators lean into species that are dependable, scalable, and consumer-friendly. That’s exactly why po***ck continues to dominate seasonal seafood menus.

Lent may be a six-week window — but the lesson is year-round: When restaurants need a whitefish that performs operationally and resonates with guests, they turn to Wild Alaska Po***ck.

Po***ck has made its way onto several restaurant menus in the U.S. as the Lenten season kicks off this year, but many other species have, too.

🐟✨ It’s officially Po***ck Season. ✨🐟 As Lent begins, quick service restaurants across the country are once again turning to a familiar favorite — Wild Alaska Po***ck. According to recent industry coverage, po***ck (along with shrimp) is leading seafood promotions this season… and we’re not surprised.

With its mild flavor, flaky texture, and versatility, Wild Alaska Po***ck has become the go-to fish for iconic Lent offerings — from crispy sandwiches to fish tacos and beyond. 🌎 Can shifting to more land-based protein increase biodiversity loss? -- A recent article from the Global Seafood Alliance highlights new research suggesting that replacing marine proteins with more terrestrial production could actually accelerate biodiversity loss due to land conversion and agricultural expansion.

At GAPP, we believe sustainable food decisions must be grounded in science. That’s why we conducted the Alaska po***ck fishery’s first two lifecycle assessments — which found that Wild Alaska Po***ck has an exceptionally low carbon footprint, lower than virtually any terrestrial protein, including chicken and beef.

As one of the world’s largest and best-managed wild capture fisheries, Alaska po***ck demonstrates that responsibly managed seafood can help feed a growing global population while minimizing climate and biodiversity impacts.

Sustainability isn’t about land vs. sea — it’s about smart, science-based choices.

Authors argue that expanding land-based protein production could amplify biodiversity loss, whereas well-managed fisheries can operate within existing ecosystem structures.
