WELD Deputy Director Carolyn and WELD participant hold the recognition certificate that went along with the $4000 grant from SISM.

This is her mission statement:
"My recovery journey is the foundation of who I am and the work I feel called to do. It taught me what hope feels like when it’s fragile, what self‑advocacy looks like when your voice is just beginning to come back, and how self‑empowerment grows when someone finally believes you’re capable of more. Those lessons didn’t just change my life, they shaped my purpose. I carry lived experience that connects me deeply to people who are homeless, in recovery, or reentering society after incarceration. I’ve walked beside individuals who have been dismissed, underestimated, or written off, and I’ve seen firsthand how powerful it is when someone is met with dignity instead of judgment. That perspective drives my commitment to trauma‑informed care, peer support, and systems that actually help people rebuild. Everything I do, professionally and personally, is rooted in the belief that people deserve second chances, real support, and the tools to advocate for themselves. My story isn’t just about surviving; it’s about using what I’ve lived through to inspire hope, create pathways forward, and stand with those who are still fighting for their own transformation." - Melissa
