Our Rights. Our Vote. Our Future.

Today, the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle and New Beginnings Christian Fellowship (NBCF) joined with pastors, community leaders, sponsors, and community members for a powerful gathering at Garfield High School, followed by a march to the King County Courthouse.

We were honored to hear from Principal Tarance Hart and see Garfield students contribute through song and inspiring remarks.

Rev. Braxton of NBCF emphasized a vital message: we must educate, engage, and register people age 40 and younger—and ensure they understand the power of their vote. Their voices and participation are essential to our collective future.

The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle Guild was proud to support this important movement. Special thanks to the leadership team at the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle, ULMS Guild members, participating churches, community partners, sponsors, students, and everyone who showed up with purpose.

Six unforgettable days. Countless conversations. Inspiring leaders. Lasting connections. One shared mission.

What an unforgettable six days in Nashville at the 2026 National Urban League Conference! As President of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle Guild, I couldn't be prouder of how our Guild represented our community and embraced every opportunity to learn, connect, and grow.

From inspiring morning plenary sessions led by President & CEO Marc H. Morial to leadership development, Guild business sessions, and meaningful conversations with affiliates from across the country, every moment challenged us to grow, lead, and serve with even greater purpose.

One of the conference highlights was celebrating the re-election of our National Council of Urban League Guilds President, Angela R. Simmons-Smith, as she begins her second term of leadership. We were also honored to hear from former Vice President Kamala Harris, stand alongside Attorney Ben Crump and the families of Nolan Xavier Wells, Daniel Erving, and Tyler Smith in their continued pursuit of justice, and celebrate the incredible work taking place throughout the Urban League Movement.

A special congratulations to our own President & CEO Michelle Merriweather of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle on receiving the prestigious Women of Power Leadership Award. Watching her recognized for her visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to our community was a proud moment for all of us.

Beyond the conference sessions, we strengthened friendships, built new relationships, and returned home stretched, challenged, renewed, and more committed than ever to the work ahead.

I am grateful to have shared this experience with our Vice President and Past President, Callie Vassall. My sincere appreciation to President & CEO Michelle Merriweather for her continued support of our Guild and for believing in our vision by investing in our leadership and participation. Thank you also to our Advisor Linda Taylor and Liaison Shelly Bournes for proudly representing the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle Guild.

The conference theme, "One Mission. Stronger Together.", came to life throughout the week. It was a powerful reminder that when we invest in people, build meaningful partnerships, and lead through service, our collective impact grows stronger.

We return to Seattle energized, inspired, and ready to put what we've learned into action as we continue advancing the mission of the Urban League.

Thank you to President & CEO Marc H. Morial, the National Urban League, the National Council of Urban League Guilds, and the Middle Tennessee Guild for hosting an exceptional conference.

Until we meet again in Los Angeles in 2027…the work continues.

It’s , and we’re inviting our community to take action by supporting the 3rd Annual Black Hair Care Drive in partnership with YouthCare, Friends of Youth, PorchLight, and The Sophia Way. We’re helping provide Black youth and families experiencing homelessness with culturally relevant hair care products that are often difficult to access or afford.

In King County and across the country, Black individuals and families experience homelessness at disproportionately high rates due to historical and ongoing systemic inequities. While hair care may seem like a small need, it can have a profound impact. Access to the right products helps people care for their hair in ways that honor their identity, culture, and personal dignity.

For a young person or parent experiencing homelessness, having the products they need can mean feeling confident, cared for, and more like themselves. It's about more than hygiene. It's about dignity, self-expression, and belonging.
