Today, we honor and celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day! ❤️

Let’s shift the focus from celebrating Columbus to uplifting Indigenous communities and their enduring contributions. It’s time to acknowledge the harm caused by colonization and instead honor the resilience, cultures, and histories of Indigenous peoples.

“Understanding the importance of visibility through an Indigenous lens sets the tone for understanding cultural values and representations as an Indigenous community. Since time immemorial, Indigenous communities have had a kinship with ʻĀina (land) and have lived in harmony with the ʻĀina. The value and contributions from our kupuna and all who have paved the way for the next generation knew the challenges we would face as evolution shifted in the eyes of greed. Today, cultural restoration through the revival of indigenous languages, actively bringing cultural practices to live in spaces like ʻĀina, and spirituality should continue to be uplifted and celebrated.”

Scholar, activist, author, and poet Haunani-Kay Trask was well-known for championing Native Hawaiian rights and sovereignty, as exemplified by her various publications and public speeches.
Her book, “Notes From a Native Daughter: Colonialism and Sovereignty in Hawaii” (1993), is regarded as a must-read for modern Hawaiians. It brought attention to colonialism's impacts from the ground up—not only from the perspective of its people. Her unapologetic perspectives on Hawaiian Sovereignty and politics electrified Kānaka Maoli activism and opened the door for collegiate discourse and curriculum by Hawaiians, for Hawaiians.

In one of the most pivotal moments in modern Hawaiian history, standing before her people, Dr. Trask demanded our sovereignty be returned and our lands freed from military occupation, reminding all of us then and now: “We are not American. We will die as Hawaiians. We will never be Americans.” The date was January 17th, 1993, the centennial anniversary of the overthrow.

That speech, that day, that moment, would be the match that reignited Hawaiian nationalism for generations to come.
