Hello Thornton Creek PTA supporters!

After years of bias treatment and lack of authentic support from many individuals in leadership positions at Thornton Creek Elementary School, our diverse and anti-racist advocacy group has made the very hard decision to dissolve TC PTA. We are very proud of the work we have accomplished over the years with the engagement of hundreds of Families of Color and allies. And, we are greateful for community that did show up when others tried to exclude and suppress our voices time and time again.

We will continue to advocate for anti-racist and anti-abelist school practices and community-building across the district, however, in a few days we will be shutting down this page.

If you would still like be connected to this important work, we suggest following our friends at Seattle Council PTSA who have long modeled the authentic community engagement that we strived for at our school. As the “umbrella” PTA for all PTAs in Seattle, they advocate for and with all students in Seattle Public Schools.

SCPTSA Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Leadership Meeting:
➜ The Washington State History We Were Never Taught

With Education Leader, Consultant & Policy Expert Mary Fertakis and SCPTSA Co-president Sebrena Burr

An authentic, truthful conversation about our state and country’s real history is necessary, and we must push back on current efforts to repress this information. It is critical for all of us to be aware of the intentional laws, policies, and practices that were put in place decades ago and their continuing, negative impact on specific groups of students today. When we understand this historical context, we have a solid foundation for determining the types of system changes necessary for every student to experience belonging and success.

The intent of this presentation is to fill in some of the gaps of what we were not taught in our Washington state history classes in order to identify and name the roots of many of the issues we are facing today. A deeper understanding of our local history is a useful tool to inform policy and resource allocation decisions within the school communities, and helps all of us call out the deeply embedded practices that harm students and families in the education system.

➜ Interpretation into ASL, Somali, and Spanish provided. To request accommodations and/or interpretation into another language, please email [email protected].

It is time for everyone to join DHH families and say “saying sorry isn’t enough. We need change. The Safe and Welcoming Environments guardrail means nothing if it does not apply to everyone.
