Skyway! We are celebrating our one-year anniversary of opening the Skyway Resource Center (SRC)! Can you believe it's already been a year? While the space is still being activated, we are proud of the progress made in the past year. The SRC is the direct outcome of community advocacy, empowerment and a dedication to 98178.

Since May of 2025, we have hosted many community events and workshops at Skyway's first community-owned and operated space. Some of these events include Business Resource Fairs, Anti-Displacement Workshops as well as community gatherings and celebrations.

What would you like to see at the SRC in the next year?

Please join us for the third session of the Skyway Anti-Displacement Workshop Series, a community learning space developed by Skyway Coalition in partnership with People’s Economy Lab.

In workshop one, we introduced the Community Development Association (CDA ) model and grounded ourselves in Skyway’s anti-displacement history. In workshop two, we explored Community Wealth Building as a framework for equitable economic development. In this third session, we’ll look at the anti-displacement projects already taking shape in Skyway, hear from project leaders, and explore how a Skyway CDA can best support the work ahead.

Workshop #3: Mapping Skyway’s Anti-Displacement Landscape and Shaping the Role of a Skyway CDA
Thursday, June 4th 2026 @ 5:00 PM
Skyway Resource Center – 12610 76th Ave S, Seattle, WA 98178
Enjoy community, learning, food and door prizes!

In this workshop, we will:

-Ground ourselves in Skyway’s history, the forces driving displacement and lessons from the first two workshops
-Explore anti-displacement and housing projects underway in our neighborhood
-Hear from leaders advancing anti-displacement work in Skyway
-Identify key gaps, priorities, and opportunities
-Explore how a Skyway CDA can help strengthen and align these efforts

This series is open to residents, community leaders, organizations, and anyone invested in a future where Skyway-West Hill remains a place where longtime residents, families, and small businesses can stay, grow, and thrive.

Why this matters:
Important anti-displacement work is happening in Skyway right now. This workshop is a chance to take stock of that work, learn from it and continue shaping a stronger community-controlled development strategy for the future.

“The story here is community power.”

Thank you to the Seattle Times for covering the story and interviewing our Executive Director, Rebecca Zapata, on the new site for the Skyway Community Center. Community is at the heart of everything we do and we are overjoyed to continue this community-focused and driven work here in the 98178.

"Zapata, from Skyway Coalition, credited the step forward to years of local organizing and persistence. She sees the new community center fitting with other projects that are making Skyway a stronger and more walkable area."

“King County Parks has entered an agreement to purchase the former Skyway Park Bowl — a beloved mid‑century building located at the northwest corner of Skyway Park — with the intent to transform the 3.82‑acre property into a vibrant hub for community life.”

We are proud that our collaborative efforts with King County Parks over the past several years has helped advise the selection and purchase of Skyway Bowl as the location for the new Skyway Community Center.

Skyway Coalition has worked with and represents the community voice that has spearheaded the Skyway Community Advisory Committee (SCAC). We are thrilled to celebrate this big news with our community.

Please join us for the second session of the Skyway Anti-Displacement Workshop Series, a community learning space developed by Skyway Coalition in partnership with People’s Economy Lab.

In our first workshop, we grounded ourselves in Skyway’s anti-displacement history, current realities, and the opportunity presented by the CDA (Community Development Association) model. In this next session, we’ll build on that foundation by diving deeper into Community Wealth Building as a framework for equitable economic development and continuing the conversation about how a CDA can serve Skyway.

Workshop #2: Community Wealth Building and Shaping the Vision for Skyway
📆 Wednesday, April 15, 2026
⏰ 5:00 - 7:00 PM
📍Skyway Resource Center – 12610 76th Ave S, Seattle, WA 98178
🍕Food provided

In this workshop, we will:
-Explore Community Wealth Building as a practical strategy to fight displacement and strengthen local economic power
-Go deeper into the CDA model and what role it could play in Skyway’s future
-Gather community input to help shape the vision, priorities, and possibilities for a Skyway CDA
-Create space for reflection, discussion, and collective strategy

This series is open to residents, community leaders, organizations, and anyone invested in a future where Skyway remains a place where longtime residents, families, and small businesses can stay, grow, and thrive.

Why this matters:
As development pressures continue across the region, Skyway has an important opportunity to strengthen community-rooted strategies that build power, expand local ownership, and shape development on our own terms. This workshop is part of that effort.

Since 2018, our partner Community Land Conservancy (CLC) has given Black, Indigenous, People of Color community members and local leaders from conservation organizations a say in how undeveloped land should be used. In collaboration with Skyway Coalition, they are working on creating thriving and affordable green neighborhoods through the Skyway Coalition Homeownership and Green Space Project.

In 2024, they were awarded an Environmental Justice Fund grant from the City of Seattle Government that helped compensate coalition members for their time and expertise, allowing them to continue working on ensuring neighborhoods like Skyway meet the climate, health, and social needs of its residents.
