Cadet Officer Application and Testing Week

The Cadet program(s) has been growing in ranks and evolving as we continue to work every week and more time passes since the COVID-19 Emergency orders have been lifted. With 2 weeks left in our February Open Enrollment, our ranks have already surpassed 36 active Cadets and counting. Additionally, we have another 12 "Inactive" Cadets on our roster. These "inactive" Cadets, due to their busy personal schedules or other hardships, can only participate when they have an opportunity.

The Zone 3 Fire Cadets now finds itself looking at reactivating Delta Company and possibly adding Echo and Foxtrot Companys to our Corps of Cadets. It is very important for every leader, especially a young leader, to maintain "Span of control" over their Cadets and tasks. So, keeping the company's small will allow each Cadet Officer to maintain a good span of control over their assigned company and Cadets while still learning and enjoying their Cadet experience.

Cadet Officer positions open on an as-needed basis. Typically, as soon as an officer announces their resignation, the testing process begins for those interested in the position. The testing process typically includes three sections:

Initial Cover Letter: a cover letter must be provided to present interest in the position and initiate the testing process for the applicant. Format is flexible.

Written Exam: the written exam consists of thirty questions (twenty-five multiple choice and five short answer). Time limit is one hour.

Advisory Board Interview: the board will consist of the Chief Advisor, a minimum of two post Advisors, and the Explorer holding the position being applied for. At Times, such as the case will be with this next set of interviews, we will be opting for an interview board made up of Firefighters from various agencies to conduct the interviews.

For the past few months, we have been announcing that Cadets who are interested in applying and testing for an Officer position, can test on Wednesday February 22, 2023 at station 81 and the interviews and assessments will occur on March 1, 2023 at station 46. Some Cadets will be going through the entire process as a practice for when the are ready to assume a leadership position in the future or as they go out and begin applying for employment at the various agencies or other businesses.

During testing and interviews, all other Cadets will be practicing past skills of CPR, Ropes and Knots, Vitals, REHAB duties in medical. Each of these past skills will also help the new Probationary Cadets to better learn the program and get their probation manuals signed off as they learn these new skills and information.

We Wish all the Cadets the Best!

Reminder: February is Open Enrollment Month. 2 weeks left for youth 14 to 20 years of age to apply to join the ranks of the Zone 3 Fire Cadets. Visit our "Meetings" and "Apply" pages on our website. March 1st is last day to turn in applications for this period.

EMT - Emergency Medical Technician

Defined as: Professionals who are trained and certificated or licensed to respond to medical emergency calls, provide medical services and transport patients to medical facilities. Some states have multiple levels of EMT positions. EMT-B - Basic Life Support is the first level in your career as an EMT.* - source: U.S. BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS

Please Share with those who may benefit.

All of the Cadets who participate in either our Zone 3 Fire Cadets program or is a student/ Cadet in our Fire and Emergency Services class at Puget Sound Skills Center , have the opportunity to earn a sponsorship to participate as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Student. Earning your EMT training and certification is a huge step forward towards your career goals. As a college level course, it requires focus and dedication.

For the Cadets who apply to area Zone 3 / South King County, agencies this could be a positive as most area agencies require their firefighters to also be EMT certified.

EMT classes are 14 weeks with more than 120 hours of in-class learning, practical work and 10 hours of hospital observation time. These classes are held in partnership with our regional fire departments and occur in the Spring and Fall of each year.

Here you see another group of our Zone 3 Fire Cadets and a Puget Sound Skills Center Fire Cadet preparing for the next EMT class by taking their Bloodborne pathogens and HIPAA classes. One Cadet in this picture is taking the classes in preparation for upcoming Ride-Alongs with area partnering agencies.

This past Saturday, we joined Puget Sound Fire and King County Library System Valley View Library in SeaTac to provide a very fun and interactive "FIREFIGHTER DAY" for the community. The event began with a slideshow, demonstration, and story read to the children by Ms. Taylor, Public Educator with Puget Sound Fire.

After the interactive story time, the over 100 participating families had an opportunity to then take the children and meet the Fire Cadets in the main room. The Cadets were spread out through the course and assisted the children through a miniature firefighter challenge course where all of the children received a goodie bag at completion of the course. The children also had an opportunity dress in mini bunker gear to take pictures with a cutout of a real Fire engine.

The children were then treated to firefighters and 3 different apparatus parked outside. The children and families definitely enjoyed this as they got into each of the apparatus, took pictures, learned about each and received more goodies.

The 3 apparatus were:
1) Engine 347 which serves City of SeaTac - Government and surrounding areas.

2) REHAB 302, a retired AID UNIT donated by Enumclaw Fire Department , that the Zone 3 Fire Cadets use to provide support services to emergency responders.

3) Antique 1971 Seagraves fire engine privately owned by the Pendersen Family and is always a crowd pleaser.

The Cadets at this event represented Cadets from the Zone 3 Fire Cadets program as well as the Puget Sound Skills Center Fire and Emergency Services program. The Cadet programs provided the challenge course, mini-bunker gear and lots of fun, laughs and memories.

Thank you all for the Great day and wonderful memories!

This weekend Mountain View Fire and Rescue Mountain View Fire & Rescue Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 3186 , King County Fire District 20 , Puget Sound Fire Kent Firefighters Local 1747 are helping cover Vashon Island while Vashon Island Fire & Rescue members attend training. These units will have a shift full of new experiences, meeting new residents, businesses and puppies while learning the areas they are covering.

Zone 3 (South King County) agencies routinely work and train together nearly everyday. So though the agencies are unique to the areas they serve, they truly are "One Huge Family" of first responders working to benefit their communities and others when needed.

Vashon Island Fire & Rescue is a part of Zone 3 and they have assisted on the "mainland" to as well, especially during wildfire incidents. It is great to see the other agencies getting an opportunity to work on the island.

Your Mountain View firefighters on Engine 392 are providing mutual aid to Vashon Island Fire & Rescue with Aid 322 from King County Fire District 20. Our crews are covering fire and medical calls for Vashon Island while their firefighters participate in training.

In South King County, fire and ems crews regularly cover each other’s jurisdictions during large scale incidents and training events.

Puget Sound Fire has a working Residential fire on East Hill.

Multiple callers describing smoke and flames on the back wall of what appears to be an abandoned home on the 26000 BLK of 116th Ave SE. E374 called in a thermal column and got the working upgrade in motion.

Crews were offensive and softening the home when one crew called in a priority traffic for soft flooring. Command immediately went to defensive posture with all crews exiting the structure. Fire control and a clear search from the exterior only, soon followed.

Valley Regional Fire Authority , King County Medic One and the Zone 3 Fire Cadets - RHB305 with Cadet are on scene.

During these responses, the Cadets learn valuable information and lessons. Most importantly, for the Cadets, is they get to work and help the firefighters, medics and police officers of the various agencies that we serve. At times we assist the residents, community members as well during an incident.
