Hey Seaside Neighbors!

Here is an update from the Seaside Green Team. Mark your calendars for March 25th...(see below)

Hello Everyone,

It's been a while, but I hope this finds you all well.

As most of you know, several months ago I concluded that I needed to step away from the Seaside Green Team corner garden project. It's been about a year and a half since I sent out an email to the group, inviting you to join me for a work day there, and a little over a year since I worked down there on my own.

Though there were always some homeless people in that area, with the exception of one obviously disturbed woman who threatened me once with physical violence, they were generally friendly--or at least benign--and seemed to respect the garden and appreciate what we were trying to do there. Then something changed. A larger group moved into the garden. They seemed to adopt it as their own personal party zone/campground, and were destructive--ripping the limbs off of trees and shrubs, trampling the plants, and leaving their trash (and worse) strewn about. This was very discouraging and they were rather intimidating. I didn't feel good about asking anyone to go down there to work with me in that atmosphere and, eventually, I realized I couldn't/didn't want to do it either. After 18 years of "in the ground" work on that corner and a year or two before that trying to help get the garden started, I finally gave myself permission to give it a rest. My own yard needed work and that seemed like a better place to devote my time, energy, and money.

Aside from the vagrant problem, it was also my understanding that street improvements (which I thought were to begin construction last year) were going to physically impact that corner. A right turn lane was (is?) to be added on Canyon del Rey, Fremont Street was/is to be realigned, and a bus lane and sidewalk added to Fremont. All of these would cut into the existing garden area. It was my hope that after those changes were made, a new, improved, more open drought resistant demonstration garden would be established on that corner, incorporating the best of was left of the original garden. I still think it's a good idea, but I'm no longer interested in being the one responsible for the whole thing; that was never my intention in the beginning, but with other Green Team founding members moving away, passing away, losing interest, or just getting busy with other things in their lives, it just worked out that way.

Last week I got a phone call from Dave Fortune, Maintenance & Utilities Superintendent with the City of Seaside. He was contacted by a person who is interested in doing some cutting back and clearing out at the corner, with an aim to discourage the vagrants, and he suggested I get in touch with her. I spoke with her last week and again today. Her name is Dianne Nielson, and she is organizing a cleanup day for Saturday, March 25. If you would like to help, she said she and others will probably start at 9 am and expect to work there all day. For more information, you can reach her by email at: [email protected]

All the best,
mary

SEASIDE BURGLARY ALERT:

All,

I am reaching out to you all to inform you we have seen an increase in home break-ins recently.. We have had 4 in the past few weeks and nearly all of them have happened in the upper north part of town. The most recent one occurred in the 1900 block of Napa St. That home had the front door kicked in and the home was ransacked. We experienced the same thing a few years back. Just like then, the suspects are going for master bedrooms and looking for jewelry. Quite often, suspects will send people (usually females) to the front door of a home and knock.. If someone answers the door, they will pretend to be at the wrong home or say they are selling something. If there is no answer, those homes could be potential targets. We have seen most points of entry into the homes through a window or door in peoples backyards.. Nearly all the burglaries occurred during the weekday between the hours of 8:00 am - 1:00 pm..

Please reach out to your neighbors and encourage them to call the police for suspicious activity.. We need your help! You can contact me directly if you have any questions.. We will be sending out a media public safety announcement today and we have increased patrols in the neighborhoods.. We do not have any strong suspect leads now, but I will pass that info along once we do..

Thank you and stay safe!
