It's dark when we unlock the door these days.

Lights on, grinder going, nobody out on Main yet.

Then somewhere around 7:30 the sun finally clears the rooftops and the whole front of the shop goes gold for about twenty minutes.

We think that's the best part of the day right now.

You're welcome to come see it. We open at 7.

She came in for directions.

That's the honest version. Stopped at the corner, looked at her phone, looked up at the sign, and decided the humans inside probably knew the road better than the map did. So she pushed the door open, and the bell did its thing, and she stood there for a second the way people do when they're deciding whether they've walked into somewhere or just through it.

We gave her the directions.

Two lights, then left, you can't miss it.

Then she looked at the board.

She asked what was good. Not what's popular, what's good. There's a difference and we appreciated it. She ended up with a latte and the table by the window, the one with the wobble we keep meaning to fix, and she stayed longer than a person needs to stay for a drink she ordered on the way to somewhere else.

She was still there an hour later. Phone face down. Watching Main Street do what Main Street does on a weekday.

She's been back four times since.

That corner table's open right now, if anyone's looking for directions.

Monday doesn't care about your weekend. Neither does the espresso machine. Both start at 7.We're open. Come in.

The fog came up off the lake this morning and hasn't decided to leave yet.

Main Street looks like a photograph someone forgot to finish developing.

Good weather for standing still. Good weather for a latte you drink slowly, both hands on the cup, watching the street come back into focus one storefront at a time.

We're open. The mist is free.
