The concept of CERT was born in the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1985. They realized that, during major disasters such as earthquakes, first responders would not be able to meet the demands for fire and medical services. People would have to be self reliant to help meet their immediate life saving and life sustaining needs. Among the subjects taught during the basic CERT class are:
• fire suppression
• light search & rescue and cribbing
• triage and basic first aid techniques
• basic preparedness
• incident command structure

We have assisted with multiple events such as Hurricane Helene Relief Drive, Cooling Station Water distribution, and public service events. Our members have gone on to take more advanced courses and certifications such as damage assessment, Red Cross Shelter Operations, NOAA SkyWarn, compass/map reading, disaster psychology, hazmat, and electrical safety

Yesterday marked the 56th anniversary of Hurricane Camille, one of the most devastating hurricanes in American history. On August 17, 1969, Camille made landfall along the Mississippi Gulf Coast as a Category 5 storm, bringing catastrophic winds, storm surge, and flooding. A few days later, the remnants of Camille struck Central Virginia, including Nelson County and surrounding areas, with unprecedented rainfall and deadly flash floods.

Hurricane Camille claimed the lives of more than 250 people nationwide, with over 120 lives lost in Virginia alone. Beyond the tragic loss of life, entire communities were forever changed, leaving a legacy of resilience, remembrance, and the importance of preparedness.

As we reflect on this anniversary, please remember those who were killed by this storm and those who were affected. Let us also honor the first responders, volunteers, and community members who gave their all in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

Of course! Here’s the revised version with “devastating” changed to “significant”:

🎉 Today We Celebrate 4 Years of Scottsville Task Force 17 🎉

On July 28 & 29, 2021, the Town of Scottsville was struck by significant straight-line winds that caused widespread damage throughout our community. In response to that event, a dedicated group of volunteers stepped forward—and Scottsville Task Force 17 was born.

Today, we proudly celebrate four years of service, strength, and resilience. Task Force 17 has grown from an emergency response effort into a trusted and dependable resource for our community, supporting everything from disaster response to public safety events and weather operations.

🗣️ “What started as neighbors helping neighbors during a storm has grown into a dedicated team committed to protecting and serving our community. I’m incredibly proud of how far we’ve come.”
– Captain Jack Maxwell, Program Coordinator

Thank you to every volunteer, supporter, and community partner who has helped shape Task Force 17 into what it is today. Here’s to continuing the mission—together.
