Did you know that 1 in 4 U.S. adults—over 70 million people—lives with a disability?

44% of adults 65 and older have a disability. This is nearly every waiting room, every clinic, every community.

Yet most clinicians receive little to no formal training in disability-inclusive care.

At DHEI, we're working to change that by bringing evidence-based disability health education to physician assistant programs nationwide.

Accessible care begins long before a patient enters the exam room.
It starts with education. It starts with awareness. It starts with healthcare providers understanding that individuals with disabilities deserve care that is not only physically accessible, but also respectful, informed, and patient-centered.
DHEI is committed to helping bridge gaps in disability health education so future providers are better prepared to care for patients with disabilities across all healthcare settings.

Good care begins with good communication.
For individuals with disabilities, healthcare experiences are shaped not only by the care they receive, but by how information is shared, explained, and understood. Accessible communication helps patients feel more supported, respected, and involved in their own care.
DHEI is working to help future healthcare providers build the awareness and skills needed to communicate thoughtfully and adapt care to meet each patient’s needs.

Representation in healthcare education matters.

Individuals with disabilities belong in every part of healthcare, not only as patients, but also as leaders, educators, classmates, colleagues, and future clinicians. When healthcare training reflects the real communities providers will serve, future clinicians are better prepared to understand disability through a fuller and more human lens.

DHEI is working to help strengthen that kind of education and move healthcare toward more informed, respectful, and accessible care.

Bridging gaps in healthcare for individuals with disabilities starts early. Children with disabilities and their families deserve providers who listen, adapt, and deliver care with empathy and respect. DHEI is committed to helping make that possible through education.

Patient-centered care begins with listening. When PA students receive disability-focused training, they are better prepared to communicate clearly, advocate thoughtfully, and provide care that responds to the diverse needs of their patients. Strengthening this education helps build a healthcare workforce that is more aware, responsive, and compassionate.
