I am excited to share about a national step forward for disability health education. 👍

On August 19, 2026, the National Council on Disability unanimously approved a policy brief calling for stronger disability clinical-care education and competency training for healthcare professionals.

There are far too many clinicians who enter practice without adequate preparation to care for people with disabilities.

I am especially encouraged by this development because it aligns with the mission of my nonprofit, the Disability Health Education Initiative (DHEI).

DHEI believes this national effort must include physician assistant (PA) education. Future PA’s need disability-specific training and opportunities to learn directly from people with disabilities.

Disability competency is not optional. It is essential to safe, equitable, and compassionate care.

DHEI welcomes this progress and looks forward to reviewing the National Council on Disability’s complete recommendations.
