Over two years ago, the state of New Jersey demanded up to ten years of First Choice's records, including the names and personal information of its donors.

It also tried to prevent First Choice from challenging its demands in federal court.

First Choice asked the U.S. Supreme Court to affirm that it is entitled to hold the state accountable for violating its constitutional rights in federal court.

Last week, the Supreme Court did. Unanimously.

This is a win for every ministry.

Last week, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 9-0 in favor of CMA member First Choice Women's Resource Centers.

For over two years, New Jersey has targeted First Choice for its pro-life beliefs.

The state launched an unfounded investigation of First Choice without citing a single complaint or evidence of wrongdoing.

It issued a coercive subpoena demanding up to 10 years of documents, even constitutionally protected information such as the names and contact information of First Choice's donors.

And the state worked to keep the case out of federal court.

The highest court in the land unanimously sided with First Choice, affirming that government officials who harass ideological opponents by demanding private donor information will be held accountable in federal court.

The First Amendment still means what it says, and it does not stop at the counseling room door.

In the 8–1 decision in Chiles v. Salazar, the Supreme Court delivered a clear message: the government does not get to control which viewpoints may be expressed in counseling conversations.

Christians, including those in licensed professions, now have greater assurance of their freedom to speak in accordance with their beliefs about God's design, and are not limited to state-approved viewpoints.

In Chiles v. Salazar, a major free speech victory, the Supreme Court emphasized that “the spoken word is perhaps the quintessential form of protected speech” and made clear that speech does not lose protection simply because it occurs within a licensed profession.

MAJOR Free Speech Victory ⬇️

Christian counselor Kaley Chiles works with clients who come to her because they share her Christian beliefs and want guidance consistent with their faith.

Her clients set the goals for their counseling conversations.

But the state of Colorado stepped in and took that choice away.

Under the new law, Kaley could engage in conversations that encouraged a minor to reject their God-given s*x, but she was prohibited from having conversations that helped a young person regain comfort with their body, even when that was the client’s goal.

Kaley challenged that restriction with the support of Alliance Defending Freedom.

And this week, the Supreme Court ruled 8–1 in her favor.

A win for free speech and a clear message: Counseling conversations are protected speech and cannot be limited to state-approved viewpoints.

A federal court may soon take action in a case involving the Johnson Amendment.

The Johnson Amendment is a provision of federal tax law that affects how churches and religious nonprofits engage in speech related to political issues.

For many pastors, the provision has created questions about how biblical teaching on cultural and political issues intersects with the legal framework governing churches.

Although the law itself has not changed, a recent legal challenge has prompted developments that many church leaders are watching closely.
