This week on Let's Talk About It, we're having a conversation that doesn't happen nearly enough.

Episode 32: It Happens to Boys Too

Boys can be groomed.
Boys can be exploited.
Boys can be trafficked.
Boys can be sextorted.

Yet too often, society overlooks male victims or dismisses their experiences altogether.

In this episode, we discuss the myths, warning signs, real-world examples, and why protecting boys must be part of every prevention conversation. Because grooming doesn't target gender—it targets vulnerability.

Join me as we break the silence and talk about a topic that deserves far more attention.

And if you'd like to learn more about the grooming process, how it develops, why it is often missed, and what to do when concerns arise, be sure to enroll in my Recognizing Grooming Before Exploitation™ Master Class at www.survivorledlearning.com.

🚚 What Professional Movers Might See™
www.survivorledlearning.com

Part of the What You Might See™ series, this survivor-informed course was created because of my own experience.

While I was being trafficked, I interacted with professional moving companies several times as I was moved from one location to another. Looking back, I have no doubt that some movers likely sensed that something wasn't right—but may not have known what they were seeing.

What Professional Movers Might See™ helps movers recognize potential signs of human trafficking, exploitation, grooming, coercion, and control. The course is online, self-paced, and available for both individuals and entire moving companies.

Take the next step and become a Human Trafficking Aware Company.

Some days, the fight feels bigger than me.

Human trafficking is a monster that destroys lives, exploits vulnerability, and hides in places many people never expect. After years of speaking, educating, advocating, and working for change, there are days when I feel tired, discouraged, and defeated.

But resting is not quitting.

Taking a break is not giving up.

The fight against grooming and human trafficking is a marathon, not a sprint. So when I need to pause, pray, and regain my strength, I do. Then I get back up and keep going.

Because while I may feel defeated some days, I am not defeated.

Did you know that in some cases a groomer will also groom (manipulate) the parents too?

Many offenders don't start by gaining a child's trust—they start by gaining the trust of parents, caregivers, teachers, coaches, and other trusted adults.

They may appear helpful, caring, involved, and trustworthy. The goal is simple: when adults trust them, they gain greater access to children and are less likely to be questioned.

That's why grooming isn't just about the child. It can involve grooming an entire family, organization, or community.

The more informed adults are, the harder it becomes for groomers to operate unnoticed.

Prevention begins with understanding the process.

Boys can be groomed and exploited too.

Grooming is not just something that happens to girls. Offenders target boys as well, often using attention, trust, secrecy, manipulation, gifts, validation, or opportunities to gain control before exploitation occurs.

The more we understand the grooming process, the better equipped we are to protect all children.

Learn how grooming develops, the warning signs to watch for, and what you can do to help prevent exploitation through the **Recognizing Grooming Before Exploitation™ Master Class**.

My heart breaks for this young woman and her family.

Hayden Panettiere openly shared many of the struggles she faced throughout her life, including addiction, trauma, and experiences that left lasting scars. In her memoir and interviews, she described a disturbing situation as a teenager involving being taken onto a yacht and placed in a vulnerable position with an older man she did not know.

While I cannot speak to the specific facts of her experience, many survivors of human trafficking and exploitation have described similar situations often referred to as "yachting," where power, influence, manipulation, and sexual exploitation can intersect.

Her story is a reminder that exploitation does not always look the way people expect it to look. It can occur in environments that appear glamorous, successful, or privileged from the outside.

Today, I am simply saddened by the loss of a young woman whose life reflected both tremendous talent and tremendous pain. May she rest in peace, and may we continue working to better understand, recognize, and prevent exploitation in all its forms. 💜

Books can't groom.

Grooming is a deliberate process used by a person to gain trust, lower boundaries, and create opportunities for exploitation.

However, books, movies, social media, and other forms of media can influence how we think about relationships, boundaries, secrecy, and power.

That's why it's important to ask:

What messages are we consuming, and what are they teaching our children?

Prevention starts with awareness, critical thinking, and healthy conversations.

Want to learn more about how grooming develops and how to recognize it before exploitation occurs?
