Congratulations to our inaugural Sister Cities Commission Scholarship recipients!

The Schaumburg Sister Cities Commission was proud to award its first-ever scholarships during last week’s Village Board meeting.

Congratulations to Abigail House, recipient of the German language scholarship, and Jibran Khan, recipient of the Japanese language scholarship. Abigail will attend Wisconsin University and study Microbiology while Jibran will attend the University of Illinois to study Aerospace Engineering.

Each received a $500 scholarship in recognition of their dedication to language learning, cultural understanding, and global engagement. These annual scholarships support Schaumburg students who embody the mission of the Sister Cities Commission by building bridges across cultures and promoting international friendship.

Congratulations, Abigail and Jibran! We wish you continued success in your educational journeys.

At our most recent Sister Cities Commission meeting, we had the opportunity to celebrate a heartfelt farewell and an exciting new beginning.

After many years of dedicated service, the Commission extends its sincere gratitude to Kazuko Mino as she steps down from her role. Kazuko has been an invaluable member of the Commission; her commitment has helped strengthen the bonds between our sister cities and enriched our community in countless ways. Thank you, Kazuko, for your dedication, friendship, and the lasting legacy you've left with the Sister Cities Commission. We wish you all the best in this next chapter!

At the same time, we are excited to welcome Hank Fujibuchi to the Commission. Hank brings a special connection to our Japanese Sister City of Namerikawa through his work with the Sugino Corporation, whose headquarters are located just outside the city. We look forward to the experience, perspective, and enthusiasm he will bring to the Commission.

Sister Cities Commission Members Suzanne Poeschel and Kiran Nuthulapaty had a fantastic time attending the 18th Annual Japanese Culture Night. The evening was filled with culture, community, and connection. It was especially great to see former Commission member Robi Vollkommer there as well!

Suzanne Poeschel, Chair of the Schaumburg Sister Cities Commission, was present at the Northwest Suburb’s chapter of the General Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC). Suzanne delivered an informative presentation outlining the purpose and numerous contributions of our Sister Cities commission.

The Friendship Stone is a 17-ton sandstone gift to the Village of Schaumburg, IL, from its sister city, Schaumburg, Germany. The stone was donated to commemorate the Illinois Village's 60th anniversary in 2016 and bears the coats of arms of the two Schaumburgs and the inscription "Common Heritage - Common Future".

The Friendship Stone has been relocated from the Renaissance Center to the construction site of the new Schaumburg Village Hall. The stone will be prominently displayed at the top of the stairwell.

Back in October 2018, Schaumburg Sister Cities had the pleasure of hosting the Ernestinum Bigband, founded in 2008 by Daniel Ellemann to give young musicians opportunities for intercultural and music exchange.

A group of 34 participants spent 10 days performing concerts and visiting sites in Schaumburg, IL. On October 12, 2018, the Fremd High School Wind Symphony joined the Bigband for a memorable program featuring pop, musical theatre and jazz selections.
