Two productive days in Camotán, Guatemala.
On the first day, we had the privilege of meeting with the dedicated staff of the DRISS Chiquimula and the Centro de Salud de Camotán to discuss how we can strengthen community-based maternal and newborn care. Together, we explored strategies to improve the early identification of high-risk pregnancies, strengthen referral and counter-referral systems, and enhance coordination between communities and health services.
The first component of this initiative, strengthening the early identification and follow-up of high-risk pregnancies through community health navigators, traditional midwives, and improved referral systems—is being funded through a Rotary International Global Grant. This component seeks to ensure that pregnant women are identified early, monitored within their communities, and connected to appropriate health services before complications become life-threatening.
On the second day, we met with the Mayor of Camotán to discuss a broader vision: developing an Ecosystem of Community Response to Maternal and Neonatal Emergencies that goes beyond identifying women at risk and ensures that mothers and newborns survive obstetric and neonatal emergencies.
This ecosystem recognizes that maternal mortality is often the result of multiple delays: delays in recognizing danger signs, delays in making decisions, delays in transportation, and delays in receiving timely care. The proposed ecosystem aims to connect communities, transportation systems, health facilities, local government, and community leaders into a coordinated response system that can act quickly when emergencies arise.
The Ecosystem of Community Response to Maternal and Neonatal Emergencies will be supported by Phalarope, with the Municipality of Camotán and UNFPA serving as key technical partners, helping strengthen local capacities, institutional coordination, and long-term sustainability. The vision is not to create parallel systems, but rather to strengthen and connect the systems and resources that already exist within the municipality.
No woman should lose her life because help arrived too late. No newborn should die because a family lacked transportation, information, or access to timely care. Every mother deserves the opportunity to survive pregnancy and childbirth, and every child deserves a healthy start in life.
We are deeply grateful to the staff of the Ministry of Health, the Municipality of Camotán, traditional midwives, community leaders, Rotary International, UNFPA, and all our partners for their openness and commitment to a shared vision: a Camotán where every high-risk pregnancy is identified, every emergency receives a coordinated response, and every mother and baby has the opportunity not only to reach care, but to survive and thrive.
